Ivor Salter was born on 22nd August 1925 in Taunton, Somerset, and died on 21st June 1991. A large, imposing man, he spent a career playing authority figures such as policemen or, at the opposite end of the legal spectrum, more unsavoury figures such as local unworthy Gobber Newhouse in several episodes of the BBC's adaptation of James Herriott's All Creatures Great and Small series. In the late 1970s and early 1980s he had a regular role on Crossroads as religious zealot Reg Cotterill.
Although he never appeared in Coronation Street, he did appear in two of the spin-off's: in the first episode of Pardon the Expression in 1965 as a Workman and two years later in an episode of Turn out the Lights as Eric Mahoney.
