Istanbul was a city on Earth located in the former nation-state of Turkey. Istanbul is an ancient city, which was previously known by a number of names, including Byzantium and Constantinople when it served as the capital of the Byzantine Empire.

The Hagia Sophia is one of the most beautiful landmarks in the city. (DS9 - Mission Gamma novel: Cathedral)

During the 14th century, the city was one of many affected by the Bubonic plague. The immortal being Flint was in the city when the plague came to the area. (TOS episode: "Requiem for Methuselah")

In the 19th century, the city still bore the name of Constantinople, but the name had been changed to Istanbul by the early 20th century. While on an undercover mission on Romulus in 2379, Commander Tuvok likened this to the renaming of the capital city on Romulus from Dartha to Ki Baratan. (TTN novel: Taking Wing)

During the 20th century, the Orient Express train route ran from Istanbul to Paris, France. (TNG episode: "Emergence")

In one of the Julian Bashir, Secret Agent holosuite stories, Istanbul sends several messages to the South Pacific. (DS9 episode: "Change of Heart")

History

Istanbul is Europe's most populous city and Turkey's cultural and financial center. The city covers 27 districts of the Istanbul province. It is located on the Bosphorus Strait and encompasses the natural harbor known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country.

In 1939 American adventurer Tex Thompson traveled to Istanbul at the behest of the Prime Minister of Turkey. Disguising himself as a Turk, Tex teamed up with a local guide named Ali-Baba and together they investigated a sabotage ring responsible for attacking the Turkish naval fleet. During this adventure, Tex also had a rematch with his old foe the Gorrah. The Gorrah captured Tex and his ally Bob Daley and used hypnosis on them in an effort to ascertain information regarding the naval fleet. Tex was unaffected, but pretended to be under the Gorrah's control so that he could bait him into a trap. Refusing to be taken alive, the Gorrah faked his own death and went into hiding. [1]
