When a player smelts iron ore, there is a 50% chance that the ore will be too impure to yield an iron bar. When this happens, the iron ore disappears and the player is granted no Smithing experience.
To get 100% chance of smelting an iron bar:
An iron bar can be smithed on an anvil through the Smithing skill to create iron weapons and armour, granting 25 Smithing experience per bar used. A list of iron items that can be smithed from iron bars and the Smithing levels required can be found here. They can also be found in Smithing Iron in the RuneScape manual.
Iron bars are also a very good source of money as a player only needs to buy iron ore and smelt it for double profit, considering you use a blast furnace or ring of forging.
