Cecil Harvey giving Instant Death to an enemy

Instant Death refers to any attack that automatically kills its victim regardless of Hit Points remaining. They are recurrent throughout the Final Fantasy games. Several bosses, including final bosses, are known to use instant death moves. The bosses include Astos, Chaos, Exdeath, and many others. Summons such as Odin, Gilgamesh, and Yojimbo also use Instant Kill attacks.

Some weapons deal damage and also have a chance of afflicting the Instant Death effect. The most common example of this is the recurring Assassin Dagger. In Final Fantasy X, the Support Abilities Deathtouch and Deathstrike can be manufactured onto a weapon which gives it the opportunity to inflict Instant Death. The Samurai abilities Shin-Zantetsu and Zantetsu in Final Fantasy X-2 are also instant death attacks. However, as with many instant death attacks, Shin-Zantetsu can be blocked with death immunity. Zantetsu cannot be blocked, but it can miss.

As with the use of light or holy spells such as Life, the effect of Instant Death is reversed for Zombies and the Undead. Using an Instant Death ability on the undead will cause it to be healed to full in the same way that using Life will cause it to die. Although in some games, such as Final Fantasy XII, the death status does not heal undead.

Certain spell effects, such as Matra Magic from Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift allow instant kills.

Instant death spells generally do not work on bosses, however some bosses, such as Tiamat, provided exceptions.

Instant Death is a button combo present in Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2. The button combo can instantly kill a target when used with a Battle Rifle or Sniper Rifle, though it is widely considered the hardest button combo to pull off. The combo is executed by aiming at a target's face (the front of their head) and rapidly pressing R+R+Y+B or B+X+R.

When a player executes the button combo, a sequence of events occurs that can cause an instant kill. They fire a single shot, switch weapons, melee, and fire a second shot, killing the foe. The melee (B) is to be performed when the secondary weapon appears on-screen. R+R+Y+B is superior to B+X+R because it always does damage (because of the first shot) and it does not require a partially-empty magazine (as no reload is performed).

Note that if a player runs forward as they perform the combo, then their second shot will hit them in the back of their head, killing them rather than their opponent.

  • See here to have a visual aid. It includes other button combos as well.

Trivia

  • The BXR combo is easier to accomplish with the "Boxer" button setting, which turns it into the LXR combo.
