Celeste Ial, captain of the Frayed Hunter, is ordered by Ysanne Isard to pose as New Republic officers and attack an area of space known as the No Fly Zone in order to provoke the inhabitants into attacking the New Republic. Celeste stops on her home planet of Eriadu to stock up of supplies, only to learn that Echon Tarkin, son of Wilhuff Tarkin, was there as well. Having not seen him since his assumed death at the Battle of Endor, Celeste meets up with him, and the two reminisce about the past. The two go back to Echon's old house and end up getting drunk. After meeting a young girl named Aurea Hali, Celeste stays at the mansion for the night due to her intoxication.[5]
The next morning, Celeste departs for the Frayed Hunter after waking up late. She is stopped by Aurea and Echon, who decide to join her on her mission. After being shown to their rooms on board, the Frayed Hunter arrives at Voltar, deep within the No Fly Zone. After establishing contact with the Volta, Celeste goads them into attacking. The crew escapes just as the ship is struck with an Electronic Nullifying Pulse and crashes onto the surface below.[7]
Meanwhile on the planet, Nayt Fillion and Skoti Romero witness the Frayed Hunter's escape pods crashing onto the surface of Voltar. Echon, Aurea, Celeste and Evan awaken and are attacked by Nationalist troops. They are questioned by Zak La'Rocha and Evan is killed after he fails to kill Zak.[8]

Imperial Treachery was started on September 2nd, 2008.[9] The novel is a retelling of Echon's past, which effectively makes it the first retcon for the Death Watch Revival Series. The release of the concept cover on September 4th, 2008 revealed Nightmare975's name to be Josh Bender.[2] On November 11th, 2008, Bender restarted the novel, changing the location and major parts of the storyline. The cover was also removed, due to the author's distaste in it. On February 9th, 2009, Bender released a sample of the first rewritten chapter, asking for criticism.[10] Finally, on March 5th, 2009, he released the full first chapter.[1] On May 16th, 2009, he released the second chapter.[11] After numerous delays, chapter three was released on August 30th, 2009. [3] On October 18th, 2009, Josh released a new version of the cover. [12]
