The state of Illinois is the 21st state, located in the Midwestern United States. Its largest city, Chicago, supplied the name of Chicago the Lion, and in the 1970s, local hockey team the Chicago Blackhawks played a match against Sesame Street characters.

In the early 21st century, when the United States was divided into thirteen commonwealths, the old state of Illinois became part of the Midwest Commonwealth, along with Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana and Michigan.

After the Great War, there was little civilization left in the former Illinois, except for the towns of Springfield, Macomb and Quincy in the southern part of the state. The majority of the human settlements in Illinois were either tribal villages like Brahmin Wood, Dirt Haven or Peoria, or raider camps like Freeport, Devil's Graveyard and Rock Falls.
The situation changed after the defeat of the Master and his super mutant army in the far West. The Brotherhood of Steel, a powerful California faction, constructed airships and dispatched them, to track down and assess to the extent of the remaining super mutant threat. However, a great storm broke the main airship and flung it far from its course. The mighty airship was badly damaged. The smaller sections were torn from the main craft and never to be seen again. The fraction of the crew that still survived, struggled to keep their ship aloft before finally crashing on the outskirts of the ruins of Chicago. The survivors eventually formed the Midwestern Brotherhood of Steel, a new organization, which diverged greatly from the ideals of the old Brotherhood. In time, they established a harsh rule over the towns and villages in the area of Illinois from Bunker Alpha and Bunker Beta.
