History

In 1839, an alien starliner malfunctioned and exploded, and a jettisoned lifepod crashed in the middle of a cotton field in the American South.[2][3] The pod automatically altered the appearance of its passenger named Arnus to mimic the first sentient life-form who discovered him. That life-form was a slave woman named Miriam, who saw the pod crash land.[2] And so it happened that Miriam found inside a baby boy with her mother's eyes.

In the present, Arnus is still with us. He did not age visibly beyond adulthood; to disguise this fact, he periodically assumed the identity of his own son.[3] By the late 20th century, he was posing as Augustus Freeman IV, the great-grandson of his original human identity. Still marooned, Augustus waits for Earth's technology to catch up to his lifepod's.[3] Secretly possessing superpowers that belie his human appearance, he has always performed quiet acts of charity.[3][1] But one night, Augustus' house is broken into, and he uses his powers for the first time in decades, an action witnessed by Raquel Ervin.[2]

Raquel is an idealistic teenage girl who was born in Paris Island, the poorest, most gang-ridden neighborhood in Dakota. Her prospects seemed fairly bleak until a chance encounter with Augustus Freeman IV. After seeing him use his powers, Raquel persuaded Augustus to become a superhero named Icon, with herself as his sidekick, Rocket.

Augustus is portrayed as a very intelligent, somewhat stiff kind of person. Due to his upper-class job as a big time lawyer and "proper" way of speaking; is often criticized as being a "sell out" or "white washed". He usually prefers to do everything by the book instead of acting on instinct.[4] During the majority of his series, Icon mostly fought plain street criminals and those who gained powers from Dakota's Big Bang.

Powers and Abilities

Powers

Unique Physiology: Icon's lifepod altered his DNA so he would resemble a normal human being, thus enabling him to blend among Earth's natives. A side effect of this process was the maximization of his now human/alien genetic structure. Thus, Icon possesses a variety of superhuman abilities that are unusual even for a Terminan.[1]

  • Superhuman Speed & Reflexes: Icon possesses the ability to think, move, and react at superhuman speeds.[2]
  • Superhuman Stamina: Icon possesses highly efficient musculature which produces almost no fatigue toxins, granting him almost limitless stamina in all physical activities.
  • Flight: Icon flies by manipulation of gravitons, manipulation of magnetic fields, control of his absolute molecular movement, and utilizing his superhuman speed. Icon can fly far beyond supersonic speeds, but it is unknown if he can achieve nearly the speed of light.[2]
  • Enhanced Senses: Icon possesses superhuman senses of sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing.[6]
  • Enhanced Mental Perception: Icon possesses the ability to sense & comprehend things on levels that far exceed human capabilities.
  • Invulnerability: Icon seems to possess nigh-invulnerability, being capable of withstanding tremendous impact forces, high caliber bullets,[4] exposure to temperature and pressure extremes,[7] and powerful energy blasts without sustaining injury.[8] Icon's invulnerability has not been portrayed consistently. If he is not expecting an attack, he can be injured more easily. For example, in Icon #2, he sustains a bloody nose from getting hit in the face with the butt of a rifle that surprised him. After being injured by Payback[6], Icon began wearing alien body armor to grant him further protection.[9]. However, in a fight with Superman, he took numerous blows from the Man of Steel and was able to match his endurance.[10]
  • Accelerated Healing: Despite his nigh invulnerability to injury, it is possible to injure Icon. If injured, his body is capable of quickly repairing damaged tissue with much greater speed and efficiency that the normal human body.[6]
  • Energy Generation: Icon has the ability to generate and control a radiant energy based on positrons.[11] He can manipulate this energy for various effects.
  • Concussive Force Bolts: Icon can release positron energy from his hands as bolts of concussive force.[11] A low power force bolt can flick on a light switch[12] while a force bolt at maximum power can stagger Superman.[5]
  • Stun Bolts: Icon can project low-energy bolts that render human beings unconscious by disrupting the electrical impulses in their nervous systems.[13] Icon can also use these bolts like an electromagnetic pulse to overload electronic devices.[14]
  • Energy Enhanced Punches: Icon can focus positron energy into his fists, which he can then use to shatter virtually any substance.[14]
  • Energy Pulse: Icon can release all of his body's positron energy as a massive omnidirectional pulse of devastating power.[12]
  • Positron Field: Icon can detect the presence of Bang Babies within his vicinity by flooding an area with a field of positrons.[15] The field interacts with the invisible quantum well surrounding a Bang Baby, who then glows as he or she gives off mild gamma particles. Hence, Icon can use these fields to distinguish Bang Babies from other metahumans as well as normal humans

According to Icon, he possesses powers that all humans will possess once they evolve past their limitations.

Terminan Physiology

  • Decelerated Aging: Icon possesses extraordinary longevity, enabling him to age at a vastly slower rate than that human beings.[2] Hence, though centuries old, he appears to be no older than forty. Icon's lifespan is typical for a Terminan and the only power that is not the result of his genetic maximization.[16]

    Abilities

Expert Lawyer: Icon is among the Cooperative’s most celebrated mediators. He has extensive knowledge of the Cooperative legal system as well as decades of experience in his chosen field. Icon is an equally adept corporate lawyer due to his mediator background and a century’s worth of experience in American law.[3][1]

Master Combatant: Icon is also a formidable combatant, whose fighting skills rival those of Superman.[5][1] Icon is well trained in unarmed and armed combat, having fought in major conflicts ranging from the Civil War to World War II.[3][1] Some opponents underestimate Icon’s abilities since he tries to peacefully settle disputes before pummeling his foes.

Bilingual: Icon is fluent in English and Galactic Standard, the native language of the Cooperative.[11][14]

Strength level

Icon possesses vast superhuman strength, putting him almost in the same class as Superman.[5]

Paraphernalia

Equipment

Icon wears a costume composed of alien materials that grant him further protection from projectile weaponry, energy beams, and intense heat or cold.[6] On his command, the Info Tool aboard his starship uses its Maker to construct Icon's costume over his civilian clothing (see Transportation).[17] When no longer needed, the costume is disassembled, converted back to energy, and stored in the structural files of his ship's Info Tool.

Transportation

For interstellar journeys, Icon employs his personal starship that is a gift from the Cooperative.[12] Like all Cooperative vessels, Icon's starship is equipped with a faster-than-light drive that allows it to shift into the realm called Hyperspace. Within hyperspace, the speed of light is not a limiting factor and thus cannot prevent the starship from quickly traversing interstellar distances. Icon's starship is also equipped with cloaking technology that can render the vessel invisible to both the human eye and all forms of Earthly electronic surveillance.[18] When not in use, Icon stores his starship in his "garage," a hangar located beneath his mansion’s swimming pool.[18] The pool slides out of the way to provide easy entry or exit for the ship.

Icon's starship contains a range of highly advanced Cooperative technology. Two notable items are the Information Tool and the Maker.[19] Icon's starship is equipped with a local access system that links directly with the Information Tool or "Info Tool." The Info Tool is a computerized database of virtually everything anyone within the Cooperative knows. It even contains very detailed files on the cultures, languages, history and technology of Sol III (Earth) thanks to Icon's accounts of his life on the planet. The Info Tool acquires new information from written documents, verbal accounts, and visual data inputs. The database can even scan an item (organic or inorganic) and store its molecular structure within files called "software." Apart from storing and retrieving data, the local access to the Info Tool can also link to and control any computer-operated device or system. This includes Cooperative technology like the starship's Maker to terrestrial technology like phone lines or lights.[18]

Because of all the data it has accumulated over the millennia, the Info Tool is truly self-aware and even has a personality of sorts. The Info Tool relies on verbal inputs to receive commands to perform certain functions.[19] In terms of information retrieval, the Tool can respond either verbally or by displaying its findings via holographic imagers aboard the starship. The Info Tool remains in contact with Icon via a communicator hidden in his costume.[17] The communicator's maximum range is unknown.

The Maker is a molecular factory that can construct any physical item, molecule by molecule, from structural data files stored within the Info Tool. These data files are called "software" while the objects created by the Maker are known as "hardware."[19] The Maker operates by tapping the vast energies of the reactor for Icon's starship and converting them into matter used for the construction of hardware. The Maker can create any item, terrestrial or extraterrestrial, in a matter of seconds as long as its structure is on file within the Info Tool. These include medicines, machinery (e.g., vehicles), clothing, and even food.[19] The Maker can repair or modify constructed hardware by altering its molecular structure according to the whims of its user.

The Maker can also rearrange the molecular structure of items it did not create in order to change their appearance or function.[18] To do so, the Info Tool must first scan the structure of the object to be modified. For example, Icon employed the Maker to build the starship garage beneath his mansion's swimming pool.

Icon's starship has numerous projectors through which the Maker can construct hardware within the vessel.[19] To build an item outside the vessel, the Maker relies on a special probe mounted on the underside of the starship.[18] It is the probe that facilitates the Maker repairing or remodeling Icon's possessions over great distances. Icon has often employed this feature to repair any damage to his costume.[20]

Notes

  • Icon held conservative views on economic and social issues, which often put him in conflict with more liberal Milestone Comics superheroes, including Rocket. Under Rocket's influence, he eventually began re-evaluating his views.
  • Icon #1 announced a contest, where readers answered the question "Is this comic book about Augustus Freeman IV, marooned space alien, or Raquel Ervin, budding writer in a tough neighborhood, or both?" The winning letter, printed in Icon #9, was selected because it "captured the essence of the book. The ICON series is about both characters as seen through the eyes and told through the voice of Rocket."

Because of the superficial similarity of his powers and origin story, Icon was sometimes referred to as the "black Superman." The letters page in Icon #2 includes three letters making this reference. The dismissive editorial response begins, "I think the resemblance doesn't go much beyond Augustus being a 'strange visitor from another planet.'" In conclusion, "If the Hero of Dakota was in any way inspired by the Superman mythos, it was because RAQUEL was inspired, not any of US!".

  • Icon was nominated for three Eisners and is a three-time winner of Parents' Choice Award honors.

Trivia

  • While he did not appear onscreen, Augustus Freeman was referred to several times in the Static Shock cartoon through the names of various centers and organizations, notably the Dakota-based Freeman Community Centre.

The Activation Index, the Key or Sacred Icon as the Covenant call it, is an object found in every Installation's Library. It is the key needed to activate the Installation, causing a reaction that will purge the galaxy of all sentient life. When inserted into the Core of the Ring, the Index activates the Installation's main weapon. It is confirmed that an Index cannot be used to activate any Halo besides the one it is found on.[1] The reason Alpha Halo's Index worked on the replacement ring at the Ark was because they were both Installation 04. This may be found in all of the libraries on all seven Halos.

John-117 noted in his debriefing of the Halo event that, if not for Cortana's intervention, he would have accidentally activated the weapon and destroyed all life in the galaxy. Halo’s main weapon exists primarily in case the Flood manage to escape containment and spread their infection to other planets. Only one firing of the rings occurred, at the close of the Forerunner-Flood War.

Summary

The purpose of the Halo Rings is to destroy all sentient life in the galaxy, the Flood's food source, so that the Parasite would starve to death. The rings are also used to house the Flood and keep them contained. The Index is vaguely 'T'-shaped, with a faint green glow emanating from a stripe on each side. (In Halo 2, the Index not only glows green, but it also glows a blue color.) The object seems to be merely a digital storage device containing the software or access codes needed to activate the rings, as shown when Cortana activates the second Installation 04 with the Index stored in her memory. The "Sacred Icon" is first seen in Halo: Combat Evolved where, with the help of 343 Guilty Spark, John-117 located and attempted to activate Halo, but was stopped just before inserting the key by Cortana. Cortana then begins to argue with 343 Guilty Spark about the course of action to take concerning the Flood. After John-117 breaks up their argument, Cortana explains to him the true function of Halo.

The Index appeared again in Halo 2, although it was for Installation 05. In an effort to stop the High Prophet of Regret from activating Delta Halo, Commander Miranda Keyes proceeded to the Installation's Library to acquire the Index. In the course of obtaining the Index, she and Sergeant Avery J. Johnson lost it to Tartarus and his Brutes when they were ambushed by Thel 'Vadamee. Tartarus then took the Sacred Icon to the Hierarchs, and the High Prophet of Truth ordered Tartarus to activate Halo and initiate the Great Journey. Knowing he needed a "Reclaimer" (human) to activate the Forerunner installation, he took Keyes to Delta Halo's Control Room where he attempted to force her to activate the ring. He was interrupted by Thel 'Vadamee's return, and after 'Vadamee's attempt to convince Tartarus that the Prophets had betrayed him, he forced Keyes' hand into the Index to activate it. Tartarus is then killed by Thel 'Vadamee and Johnson, and Commander Keyes was able to pull the Index out of the Control Room. This act put the Halo Array on standby mode, allowing them to be activated from Installation 00.

During the Battle of Installation 00, John-117 and Thel 'Vadam discovered a newly constructed Alpha Halo. The duo saw this as a solution to destroy the Flood on the Ark, and John-117 recovered Cortana from High Charity, where she revealed that she had Alpha Halo's Index in her memory banks. The Master Chief, the Arbiter, and Cortana proceeded to the new Halo's Control Room, activating the installation and destroying the Flood, the new Halo, and possibly the Ark.

The Index of Installation 05 was last known to be in the possession of Commander Miranda Keyes.

It is called "The Key" by the Gravemind in his lecture to the Chief and Thel 'Vadamee: "There is still time to stop the Key from turning", although with his manner of speech, it is not clear whether he was directly referring to the Index as "the Key", or just using a metaphor.

Other Purposes

The Terminals scattered within Halo 3's campaign levels entail that the Index may, apart from activating the Halos, be a record or copy of the life-forms that existed at the time of the Halo's first activation. The Librarian states that she is in the process of Indexing all life forms, and that she is close to "saving them all". This could be taken as meaning the Index contains a copy of all sentient life forms' DNA, which would, in a sense, save the individual by preserving them beyond their death. This could also explain why an Index takes time to fabricate: the DNA of all sentient life-forms may need to be re-collected for a new Index to be made, which would take much time. However, it would likely take a fraction of the original indexing time as the location of all sentient life is already known, making collection of samples rapid and efficient.

It could also be speculated that the Index must therefore be used to correctly fire the Halos as it contains a record of all the species which Halo must target. The Monitors state that the Flood can only be stopped by starving them of sentient hosts; the Index, with its compilation of all sentient life in the galaxy, could instruct Halo to target them in the event of activation.

Trivia

  • The Index looks very similar to a symbol of Norse mythology called "Thor's Hammer" the name of Thor's hammer is MJOLNIR which is the same name of the armor that a Spartan-II wears.
  • Cortana physically picks up the Index, although her hologram is not solid. This may have something to do with the fact that it is a computer related object, though this is never stated in-game. It is more likely that Cortana was using a computer-generated image of the Index to prove her point.

Icons are symbols on a player's map (minimap or world map) representing certain buildings and locations.

World map icon key

A Key button.

The World map key is on the lower left side and when clicked, displays a grey list of icons. In this list are icons for specific locations within the game. Clicking on any of the entries in the key list will show yellow circles flashing in the world map, indicating the location for the particular icon. The key list can be sorted in 3 different ways:

  • Alphabetical
  • Categorised
  • Traditional

Note that icons within underground areas will NOT appear on the World map.

Overview

Icon is an organization in Paragon City that helps heroes "get a new look" by letting them attain new costumes and edit old ones.

Locations

Icon can be found in three zones in Paragon City. It is marked on the maps in all cases. One location is in the north west corner of Steel Canyon, due west of the Boomtown gate. While this is the lowest level zone an Icon can be found in, it is not necessarily the safest for a low level hero to get to, as it is on the far side of the zone from the Yellow Line.

A second Icon can be found in Independence Port, due west of the Kings Row entrance. This one is often easier for low level heroes to get to, as all they must do is cross Kings Row, and then a quick run to Icon, usually with only one or two spawn sites to dodge.

A third Icon can be found in the south east corner of Founders' Falls. Some people find this one to be the easiest for low level heroes to get to since the introduction of a Pocket D entrance. After exiting Pocket D, a hero can jump into the water and swim south down the center of the canal. They then swim under the last bridge, swim east, and then climb out onto the road and cross the street into Icon.

Head Tailors

Carson can be found in charge of the Founders' Falls Icon.

Lauren heads up the Independence Port Icon.

Serge works his magic at the Steel Canyon Icon.
