Hovercraft

Also referred to as a hover-car or hover-flier, a hovercraft is a vehicle capable of atmospheric travel. Nearly all hovercrafts possess vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capabilities and are usually powered by either nuclear or electromagnetic propulsion units. Most hovercrafts have a maximum surface ceiling of anywhere between 1,500-2,000 ft (a metropolitan city skyline), though some are capable of reaching a greater apogee. On 21st century Earth, there are a few organizations and government agencies that possess hovercraft technology such as Project Cadmus, but by and large, the general public does not have access to such advanced technology. Hovercrafts are available in a variety of models, with varying levels of acceleration and velocity. Hovercrafts are commonly found in futuristic environments such as alien planets or the 31st century era of the Legion of Super-Heroes.

The Hovercraft in the DS version of Final Fantasy IV.
Hovercraft

The Hovercraft is a mode of transportation in the game Final Fantasy IV. It is owned by Edward Chris von Muir, who used it to ferry around Anna and himself. It can cross rivers, land, shoals, and shallow water. However, it cannot go through forests or over mountains. Edward lends it to Cecil and Rydia so they can reach the Antlion's Den to acquire a Sand Ruby. They also use the Hovercraft to travel to and from Kaipo, where Rosa contracted Desert Fever. Later in the game, the Enterprise can pick up and carry the Hovercraft to new locations that it could not reach before, including the Adamant Isle Grotto and the Eblan Cave.

A hovercraft is a vehicle "hovers" above the ground through the use of some type of gravity manipulation technology. They are often referred to as skimmers since they "skim" over the surface.

The hovercar, a popular mode of transportation, was first utilized on Earth in 2036. (VOY: "The 37's")

Skimmers were the mainstay vehicle of many of the ground forces involved in the Dominion War. (The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon)
