The Chaf family (which might also be styled House Chaf in Basic) was the Fifth Ruling Family of the Chiss Ascendancy, one of the group of affiliations known as the Ruling Families which provided leadership for the Chiss people. In keeping with the Chiss custom of indicating an individual's role by dominant color of their clothes, members and retainers of the Chaf family wore yellow costumes, ranging from ornate formal robes to smart but practical jumpsuits depending on their rank and duties. They controlled the planet Sarvchi.

It appears that every Ruling Family was associated with one particular area of Chiss life, and within this context, the duties of the Chaf family were apparently primarily diplomatic: from about 22 ABY onwards, in many high-level contacts with the New Republic, the Jedi Knights and the Empire of the Hand, the Ascendancy was represented by an Aristocra of the Chaf family, Chaf'orm'bintrano, also known by his core name, "Formbi". However, current evidence does not make it entirely clear what the limits of Chaf family authority were, or whether they changed over time. In 27 BBY, the Chaf family were said to have had no oversight role over the military, but in 22 ABY and later, Formbi was often found with some sort of operational oversight over elements of the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet. As well as their public duties, the Chaf family also had special interests in areas of Chiss space that may have represented a sort of private interstellar fiefdom; they controlled a fleet of their own combat-capable cruisers, crewed - at least in 27 BBY - not by CEDF warriors, but by personnel wearing the yellow colors of the Family.

All available evidence indicates that the Chaf family retained their position until 22 ABY, but during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, the Chaf were absent from a reduced list of four Ruling Families supplied in a report by the University of Sanbra, within which House Nuruodo occupied approximately the role that they had once filled, and they were apparently similarly absent when a Jedi mission visited Csilla in 29 ABY.

This discrepancy remained unexplained until 35 ABY, when it was said that five of the Nine Families had fallen from power due to internal events in the Chiss Ascendancy. This explanation is broadly credible, as it is known that the number of Ruling Families had fluctuated between three and twelve over the course of Chiss history; but since this explanation was delivered by Aristocra Formbi, it is unclear how much trust can be placed on the claimed exclusion of the Chaf from the group of surviving affiliations. As with so much information on the Chiss, it may be that outsiders' understanding of events has been confused by misinterpretation or deliberate misinformation.
