The holotank aboard the USS Enterprise-D in 2371

The holotank was a special type of laboratory which was one of the facilities which were incorporated in Federation starships to aid the vessel's stellar cartography department.

Through the use of holographic technology, a representation of an area of space can be recreated and manipulated by an individual. In 2371, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Lieutenant Commander Data used the holotank aboard the USS Enterprise-D to track the movement of the Nexus in an attempt to discover what Doctor Tolian Soran's plans were. (TNG movie: Star Trek Generations)

In 2379, William T. Riker spent time in the holotank of the USS Titan observing the "road ahead" on the eve of the Titan's mission into the Beta Quadrant. When the mission was postponed so that the Titan could take part in a relief convoy to Romulus, Admiral Leonard James Akaar took control of the hololab and made it his base of operations as he studied the brittle political climate in the Romulan Star Empire. (TTN novel: Taking Wing)

In early 2381, Chief Engineer Xin Ra-Havreii made several upgrades to the Titan's holotank to accommodate new Chief Science Officer Melora Pazlar. These upgrades allowed Pazlar to not only operate in a zero-gravity environment with the help of micro tractor beams, but also to project a holographic avatar of herself into every major area on the Titan, via a complex holopresence system. The holotank was controlled by multiple features, including a network of embedded nanosensors and a clear liquid matrix applied to the eyes to accept ocular cues. This allowed her to participate in senior staff meetings, appear on the bridge and interact with other crew members, without needing to leave the holotank. (ST - Destiny novel: Gods of Night)

Holotank displaying Cortana.

Holotank is a device used to project to a hologram. The term is used to refer to both UNSC[1] and Covenant[2] devices.

Contents

UNSC

Holotanks are used to project a hologram of information and are sometimes reserved for AIs, though other information can be displayed, such as mission recordings and holo-vids. UNSC Holotanks vary greatly in size and shape, ranging from small cylindrical pedestals reserved for AI avatars to large tables used to display tactical information.

Covenant

The Covenant commonly use holotanks on their starships, and they are plentiful in High Charity as well. AIs can also access the map data from the holotank's link to the Covenant information network and give directions verbally to anyone near the holotank. In Halo 2, Cortana enters one to gain access to info in High Charity on the level Gravemind, remaining there for the rest of the game. The Covenant also utilize portable holotanks, referred to as Holo-Pedestals, to communicate over distance or in the battlefield.

The holotank on the USS Enterprise-D.

Holotanks were special laboratories on Federation starships primarily used by stellar cartography departments. The labs made use of extensive holography to display areas of space.

In 2371, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Lieutenant Commander Data used the holotank on the USS Enterprise-D to track the course of the Nexus. (Star Trek Generations)

In 2375, Terri Letac met Autumn Bailey in the USS Swiftfire-A's holotank to review the stellar cartography department's recent work. With the Swiftfire's latest patrol route the pair were able to compile a list of objects of interest near the ship's projected course for possibly further inquiry.
