The Star Wars wiki of fan invention.

Holographic Versatile Discs were a medium of viewing that was invented circa 400 BBY, and would remain popular for centuries. They were usually discs with holographic films recorded on them, and could be played on a HVD player. The first HVDs were either black-and-white or of poor quality, but by the Battle of Yavin, they were considered the highest-quality holographic viewing material in the galaxy. They were considered somewhat obsolete by 130 ABY.

Behind the scenes

HVDs are based on real-world DVDs.
