Herzog Mine is a location in Point Lookout. Herzog Mine is set in the rock, to the south of the Ark & Dove Resting Grounds and south of the Coastal Grotto.

The Herzog Mining Site was named after an old man named Herzog, the owner of the mining site who put the miners through poor working conditions. If you talk to Kenny who lives in the mine, he states that one day the workers just stopped working and sat down, probably referring to a strike. Herzog wasn't very happy when he heard about what they were doing so he blew up the entire site with a "million million tons" (may be referring to a nuclear device, as those are measured by lb. of TNT equivalent, although this is unlikely due to the relatively small amount of damage to the mine) of dynamite according to Kenny. Kenny's exaggeration here is apparent, but there is a large amount of collapsed rock with many skeletons visible inside showing signs of an explosion and subsequent cave-in. After he detonated his explosives, Kenny says that old man Herzog hanged himself.

  • If you enter the last area of the mining site, you can see a skeleton with a rope around its neck. The skeleton is presumably Herzog, and is found with the skeletons of the workers he killed.
  • The mine has many traps set up by Kenny
  • Sometimes when entering the mine the player might encounter the body of a smuggler. His body holds a holotape which tells the player why he was killed, but the first time you approach the cliff you can actually see his execution. Some times you get to see it twice, once going into the mine and once while you leave. (PS3)
  • If you are not able to convince Kenny to stay through dialogue, you can search for Kenny's teddy bear which is at the bottom of the shaft. Once you bring it to him, he will let you stay there.
  • When you are down in the deeper part of the mine, you might see water rippling as though a person was walking through it. This could relate to the ghost of Herzog that Kenny told you about.
  • If you have the Child at Heart perk you may use his hide out without finding the teddy bear and may also play hide and seek and tag with Kenny.
  • A problem has been encountered when doing the infinite experience glitch on Kenny; I am personally level 22 and was doing this glitch when suddenly it teleported me into a rock. This bug can be fixed by saving and the loading the game. After loading while you are in the rock face, you can move freely behind it. Move around to the door that leads to Herzogs Mine and enter it. Then re-enter the Miner's Rest and continue the glitch. (Confirmed Xbox360)

Behind the scenes

  • Herzog Mine may be a referance to Herzog Island located on the Potomac in Maryland.
