Heavy explorer is a category of the explorer classification used by the Federation Starfleet. These vessels are explorers with a higher emphasis on defensive and tactical capabilities over exploratory systems. Vessels of this type are roughly equivalent to a battleship. (LUG RPG: Spacedock: The Advanced Starship and Construction Manual)

As the Hydrans converted their old dreadnoughts and battleships to supercarriers, their new generation of battleships were termed heavy explorers. (RIS Bouteina: "Spoiled Rotten")
