A Gym, short for gymnasium is a facility for physical fitness. Gyms were often a standard facility that was incorporated into many Starfleet facilities and starships, and would often come equipped with a variety of equipment for use when exercising.

The main gymnasium at Starfleet Academy was equipped with a large racquetball court and a large area for use for hypergravitational aerobics. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Republic)

Aboard Federation starships, the gymnasium was also an essential part of the recreational facilities that were offered to crewmembers. As well as the recreational uses, the gyms aboard starships were also used for training purposes, usually by the security division. The USS Enterprise's gym featured Gravity weights which in 2254, Christopher Pike exerted himself using whilst grieving for his recently deceased Yeoman, Dermot Cusack. (EV comic: "Nor Iron Bars a Cage")

In 2266, James T. Kirk took Charles Evans to the Enterprise's to practice some unarmed defense moves. Kirk hoped that the violent exercise would help take Charlie's mind of Janice Rand, in an old method practised by men in Victorian England. (TOS episode & novelization: Charlie X)

Following a fight between Doctor Carter Greyhorse and Gerda Asmund in the corridors aboard the USS Stargazer, the two both agreed to meet in the Stargazer's gym at least three times a week so that Gerda could train him in Klingon martial arts. (SGR novel: Gauntlet)

Carl boxing in a gym

Gyms are facilities in GTA San Andreas where the player can train to improve his/her physical stats. Indoor gymnasiums are unlocked after receiving a phone call from Sweet after the mission Drive-Thru, introducing the player to gymnasiums. All Gyms are open all day, every day. If, in a single day, the player loses 40% fat or gain 20% Stamina or Muscle, the player will have to wait 12 hours before being allowed to workout again.

To find a gym, view the map in the main menu and select the gyms icon in the legend (a dumbbell).

Contents

Fighting

Each gym has a trainer with a different fighting style. At each, walk into the marker and reply positively when the trainer asks if you want to learn some new moves. The training takes a tutorial-type approach, with tips on-screen to tell you how to execute the moves and when. You must defeat the trainer to learn the new moves. Each teaches you a new Running Attack, Ground Attack, and Combo Attack.

Other Gyms

These gyms are not marked on the map.

Equipment

Each gym is equipped with four pieces of exercise equipment:

Treadmill

Carl exercising on the treadmill.

This exercise increases Stamina and sheds Fat. The treadmill offers 10 speed levels (the higher the level, the faster your stats will change). Higher levels are easier with greater stamina. When CJ begins running, power and distance gauges, as well as a level indicator, appear on-screen. You must keep pace with the treadmill to keep the power gauge full - if it empties, you fall off.

Stationary Bike

This exercise increases Stamina and sheds Fat. The stationary Bike offers 10 speed levels (the higher the level, the faster your stats will change). Higher levels are easier with greater stamina. When CJ begins running, power and distance gauges, as well as a level indicator, appear on-screen. You must keep cycling to keep the power gauge full - if it empties, you'll have to start over.

Bench Press

This exercise increases Stamina and sheds Fat. The weights range from 40 lbs to 320 lbs. When you begin, a power gauge and a reps indicator appear on-screen. You must get the power gauge to fill to complete one rep.

Dumbbells

This exercise increases Stamina and sheds Fat. The weights range from 20 lbs to 110 lbs. When you begin, a power gauge and a reps indicator appear on-screen. You must get the power gauge to fill to complete one rep.

Glitch

There is a glitch that prevents you from using any equipments and complains that you have trained enough even if you haven't trained in a long time. The glitch is most commonly caused by saving at Madd Dogg's mansion but can be triggered by rare events, too. The main cause is saving the game while equipments are nearby. The best way to avoid this glitch is not to save at that mansion.

The Glitch has been found to happen if you save your game on two different slots, in a very short time. For example: Slot one save time is 16:13, and slot number five is 16:18, then nine times out of ten, the glitch will occur.

Secret

If you have a camera or a sniper rifle, zoom in on the sides of the dumbbells. You can see the logo of the Cherry Popper ice Cream Company.

A gymnasium or gym is an area dedicated to fitness and exercise. Some Federation starships were equipped with gymnasiums.

Scott Fack helped Yh'ahni hone her fighting skills in one of the USS Cantabrian's gymnasiums in 2372. (Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions: "Catalyst, Part Two")

Reece Myers and Melissa Kendrick were training in the USS Daedalus's zero gravity gymnasium when the ship suffered a loss of power. Kendrick was able to steady herself and escape injury but Myers suffered a broken arm and several ribs in a fall. Trapped in the gymnasium Kendrick had to treat Myers' injuries there. (Star Trek: Daedalus: "Enlightenment")
