The Greek flag.

The Hellenic Republic (or Greece) is a European country located on Earth.

The city of Sparta is located there. The ORION Program and its successors (SPARTAN-II and III programs) were named after and based of off the city's war-like inhabitants. Greece is related with many things such as characters, places or events in Halo universe. Areas such as Adrianople, Istanbul (Constantinople), Cyprus, & Macedonia are considered to be Greek, though whether they are held by Greece in Halo is completely unknown.

The only thing that confirms the existence of Greece during the Human-Covenant war is the UNSC Orbital Defense Platform Athens Station which is over its capital, Athens. Anything else about it is currently unknown.

Greek references in Halo

  • Gephyrophobia: Gephyrophobia (Greek: γεφυροφοβία), like many other words finishing with "-phobia", is a Greek word. Gephyrophobia, in both Greek and English, is the fear of bridges.
  • Porta: Porta (Greek: πόρτα) is the Greek word for door.
  • Melissa: Melissa (Greek: μέλισσα) is the Greek word for bee. Considering the fact that the AI Melissa is afraid of bees, we can say that her name is inspired by the insect melissa.
  • Camp Patmos: Though not surely a Greek reference, Patmos (Greek: Πάτμος) could be based on the island of Patmos, which is located at the Dodekanisa island region in southern Greece.
  • Arcadia: Arcadia (Greek: Αρκαδία) is a region located in Pelloponesus, southern Greece.
  • Papadakis: Papadakis, UNSC Marine, (Greek: Παπαδάκης) is a common Greek surname.

History

Greece

The shores of Greece's Aegean Sea saw the emergence of the first advanced civilizations in Europe whose impact is inseparable from today's western institutions and western cultural and political development. Home first to the Minoan and Mycenean worlds and above all the Classical civilization and its Hellenistic inheritor, the Romans. Greece subsequently became a province of the Byzantine Empire and later on the Ottoman Empire, before attaining its independence in 1821.

Greece is a nation-state on the continent of Europe, on Earth. It is known as Ἑλλάς (Hellás) to speakers of the Greek language. Similarly, a person who is native to Greece is known as Greek.

History

Greece is considered by many scholars to be the origin of Western European civilization, beginning with ancient Greece: Western philosophy, theater, literature, and political science all bear a heavy Greek influence. Democracy originated in Greece, as did a number of mathematical and scientific advances. Alien beings are known to have impersonated the deities that the Greeks believed in, in ancient times, and demanded various acts of servitude. (TOS: "Who Mourns for Adonais?")

Early Greece fell victim to political disunity and was conquered. However, despite the conquest by the Macedonians under Alexander the Great and later by the Romans, Greek cities such as Athens, Thessaloniki, and others continued to influence Western culture including during the era of the rise of Christianity. Greece played a major role in the Eastern Roman Empire--that is, the Byzantine Empire--only changing hands again when it came under Ottoman rule in 1453.

Greece gained its independence in the early 19th century at the conclusion of an eight-year war against the Ottoman Turks, but endured a series of other wars and invasions, including Turkey, Third Reich Germany, and civil war. These various tensions cooled off by the last years of the 20th century.

Geography

Greece is largely characterized by rugged, mountainous terrain on the mainland, and a large number of islands. At least up until the 21st century, Greece was also subject to earthquakes and other seismic disturbances.

Culture

In the 24th century, Greece is a peaceful nation. At least some families and individuals remain members of the Greek Orthodox Church, which at least until the advent of the Third World War was the established church of Greece. The city of Thessaloniki is known to have remained prominent. (Star Trek: Sigils and Unions)
