A grapplepede is distinctive because of its fluorescent yellow and orange carapace, dozens of legs, and large eyes. The grapplepede earns its name from its instincts to grab onto a prey and not let go until it has eaten its fill. Its tough carapace and dozens of legs complement this. They can pursue potential victims for hours, should the unwary victim only manage to stay yards ahead of the 'pede.

Grapplepede eggs can survive in a vacuum for weeks at a time, even through jumpspace, making them sadly common in the Marches.

Grapplepedes have an instinct to lay their eggs in cracks in rocks to protect them from competitors. This seems to apply equally to cracks in welds, open ports, hatches, and landing gear. In the wild, these terrors are often encountered in water and woodland areas. They range from finger-sized hatchlings to huge monstrosities that could devour a man's leg. While they can live in temperate zones, they thrive in humid tropical ones.

Some native tribes will use live grapplepedes as dangerous grappling hooks, by hooking ropes through the chitin. Scale and plate armor can be fashioned from their hides, although acquiring it can be an impressive deed. Some pharmaceutical companies have found that certain hormones make for a very stable panic suppressant.
