Golems were a biologically modified species of magma forms. They take over any lifeform they come into contact with and turn that lifeform into a living statue of gold. They were created by the Valnaxi as defenders of their art.
The golems, however, can only extend themselves to a certain number of lifeforms, so their are a limited number of them. Any life taken over by a Golem immediately becomes another golem to become a guard. When fighting Wurms, however, Golems are easily destroyed by modified insectoid creatures in the mud shot by the Wurms. (NSA: The Art of Destruction)
The name "Golem" comes from Jewish folklore, in which it is a man-like creature made from mud or clay.

Constructed by high level magic users, Golems come in a wide variety of designs and materials. There are even designs that have never been explored and many designs that have never been created or discovered. Golems are mindless constructs. They are driven by the tasks given to them by their creator. A Golem will perform his tasks to the death, having no emotions or desires.

Golem may refer to:
In Jewish folklore, a golem is a living creature created from inanimate material. Adam, the first man created by God in the Holy Bible, was a golem since he was created from dust and sand. Having a golem servant was seen as the ultimate symbol of wisdom and holiness, with stories of prominent Rabbis owning golems throughout the middle ages. In modern times, the word golem, sometimes pronounced goilem in Yiddish, has come to mean one who is slow, clumsy, and generally dimwitted.

Golems are magically animated beings created by magic. Unlike Undead (which are an animation of a previously living creature), Golems are an animation of non-living materials. This is usually in the form of raw materials, such as Ice Golems. Golems are the creation of magicians who animate them to act as the muscle for the magician's brain.
Golems tend to be resistent to physical damage, but being made of simple materials, they often inherit the properties of these materials. So, Ice Golems would be highly resistent to cold damage but very susceptible to fire damage.
Because Golems are not real living creatures, most of them do not leave behind a corpse that can be exploited by a necromancer. They are also normally immune to flesh based conditions such as bleeding, poison, and disease.
For a list of all types of Golems in Guild Wars, see Category:Golems.
Note: Stone Golem, Stygian Golem, Flesh Golem (minion), and Flesh Golem (monster) are not golems.
