Biography

Captain Gir Kybo Ren-Cha (often referred to as Kybo Ren, or simply Captain Kybo) began his career in piracy approximately fifteen years prior to the Battle of Yavin. He gathered a small crew of aliens like-minded to his cause and together they began raiding Imperial shipyards. On one such venture, Kybo stole a Gladiator-class Star Destroyer from an Imperial repair station. He christened it the Demolisher and added his own modifications in order to obscure the ship's identity. His crew decorated the Demolisher and a full compliment of TIE fighters with a red sigil. In addition to his flagship, Kybo also maintained his own personal attack craft – the Dianoga.

One of Captain Kybo's favorite targets was the planet Tammuz-an. Kybo recognized that Tammuz-an was a world of great wealth and riches and would frequently patrol the Tammuz-an trade routes looking for convoy ships to plunder. One day, Kybo's crew attacked a small freighter piloted by a young woman named Jessica Meade. Jessica was transporting the heir apparent to Tammuz-an, Prince Mon Julpa, back to his homeworld. Fortunately for them, the bounty hunter IG-88 was hired to capture Mon Julpa. Determined to see his bounty unharmed, IG-88 attacked Captain Kybo's ship, allowing Jessica to bring Mon Julpa safely back to Tammuz-an. However, this would not be the only time that Kybo would cross swords with Jessica Meade.

A short time later, Kybo encountered Meade's freighter while she was transporting fuel supplies for the Tammuz-an space navy. He caught Meade's ship, as well as an R-22 Spearhead (piloted by Jann Tosh) in the grip of his tractor beam. He brought the crew back to his base of operations – an island grotto on the oceans of Tarnoonga. He ordered Jann Tosh and his droid companions, C-3PO and R2-D2, to walk the plank of his desert skiff into the monster-infested oceans. Meanwhile, he took Jessica Meade back to his private quarters. He admired Jess' energy and decided to make her his official consort. Jessica had no intention of catering to Kybo's affections and deftly escaped from his clutches.

Jann and the droids avoided their respective fates as well, but Kybo managed to recapture them and put them to work aboard the Demolisher. The Demolisher found Jessica's freighter as she was leaving Tarnoonga and opened fire upon it. Fortunately, Jessica was able to flee the vessel via an escape pod. R2-D2 sabotaged the Demolisher's weapons systems, rendering many of the cruiser's command capabilities inoperable.

By this point, Mon Julpa, now the King of Tammuz-an, had sent a squad of R-22 Spearheads to assist Jessica and Jann. They engaged Kybo's TIE fighters and successfully forced the pirate crew to surrender. Captain Kybo was captured and imprisoned. Jyn Obah, one of Kybo's men, attempted to break him out of prison. Ohba was captured, but Kybo escaped with Princess Gerin and decided to hold her for ransom. He told Toda that if he wanted his daughter back, he would have to give up Kybo's crew, ship, and Mon Julpa. Julpa warned Toda that Kybo might not give Gerin back once he got what he wanted.

Meanwhile, Jann Tosh, Jessica Meade, Threepio, and R2-D2 reached the place where Kybo was. They rescued Gerin, but learned that Toda had made his deal with Kybo. Julpa told Kybo to let Gerin go, but he refused. Then Toda appeared with Sollag and an army. A battle ensued, and thanks to Threepio, Kybo and his men were defeated and recaptured.

Personality

Captain Kybo was as aggressive as he was arrogant. He believed himself capable of conquering practically any foe, and no amount of pressure could dissuade him from a chosen course of action.

Kybo enjoyed bragging to members of his crew, often referring to himself in the third person. He would shout raspy-voiced commands to anyone within the sound of his voice, followed by a raucous, bellowing peal of laughter.

Notes

  • Captain Kybo's aide-de-camp was an alien of unknown species he was named Jyn Obah.
  • Captain Kybo enlisted the service of several Gamorrean guards to safeguard his base on Tarnoonga.

Behind the scenes

The actor who provided the voice for Gir Kybo Ren-Cha in the Star Wars: Droids animated series is said to be unknown, but is most likely Don Francks, given that he worked on other Nelvana productions at the time and he has the same raspy voice as Gir Kybo.
