Gas is one of the four fundamental states of matter. A gas can best be characterized as a fluid of neutrally-charged atoms, which have sufficient thermal energy to prevent intermolecular bonding. Gas also has no fixed volume and can expand to fill any area.

In 2293, Starfleet outfitted Constitution and Excelsior-class vessels with scanners to catalogue gaseous, planetary atmospheres primarily in the Beta Quadrant. These proved effective in tracking the modified B'rel-class Bird-of-Prey. Able to fire when cloaked, its impulse exhaust caused a spike in neutron radiation. These ionized waste gases are in flux as semi-plasma, as Spock observed. Uhura was the first to suggest this improvised method of detection. As she noted this Klingon variant was rigged for stealth running on all frequencies and channels, when localizing Chang's voice. (TOS movie: The Undiscovered Country)

In 2376. during a Jem'Hadar attack on Deep Space 9, a cloud of polymer gas was released from a temp bank of atmospheric regulators. A Benzite, Monyodin, was exposed to the gas which dissolved the alveoli in his lungs, resulting in his death. (DS9 novel: Avatar)

The gas grenade Ben used. ("The Man Behind the Curtain")

In the Purge, the Hostiles used a toxic gas to kill the DHARMA staff on the Island. Ben used a gas grenade to kill his father in the DHARMA van. The delivery method at the Barracks is not known. The gas causes severe coughing and bleeding from the nose, leading to death shortly thereafter. The grenades are labeled "...431CTP; ...ARGE GAS". The Hostiles protected themselves from the gas by using gas masks.

A poison warning label can be seen running up the side of the can with a skull and crossbones at the bottom. The poison label consists of a message in large letters over a message in small latters. The visible characters in the large message are "D-------SON". The visible portions of the small message are "CONTE----OSED." ("The Man Behind the Curtain")

Some time later, after Juliet came to the island, Goodwin told her that Ben had him working with chemicals that could kill everyone on the island.

In December 2004, Charlotte and Daniel snuck away from Jack's group on the beach, making their way to the Tempest, where they ostensibly prevented a toxic gas from being released on the island. Harper had appeared to Juliet, claiming that Ben wanted the latter to stop them from releasing the gas, but she was unsuccessful in doing so, and the fact that everyone survived afterwards indicates that it was more likely Ben who wanted to release the gas, as Charlotte suggested. ("The Other Woman")

Trivia

  • The gas grenade prop used in the van was a repainted "ALSG272 Continuous Discharge, Smoke Grenade, CS" device. This same device was used without repainting in "Left Behind".
  • CTP is an abbreviation for the MIT Center for Theoretical Physics.
  • CTP is also an abbreviation for Critical Temperature and Pressure.
  • On the computer screen in the Tempest station is a list of chemicals, O-Ethyl O-(2-diisopropylaminoethyl) methylphosphonite and N,N-diisopropyl-2-aminoethane thiol, which are the immediate precursors for VX nerve gas (screencap). Thionyl chloride is also shown, and is used to make G series nerve gas. Arsenic trichloride is also shown, as well as benzilic acid.

An exploding rock
An exploding rock

The Exploding rock random event (AKA: "smoking rock" or "gas") was a random event in which a player tried to mine a rock after the point at which it began to "steam/smoke/bubble". After mining that rock for more than a few more seconds, the rock would explode which will break the player's pickaxe (see broken pickaxe) making it unusable. It would also damage the player for a number of hitpoints (based on the player's hitpoints total) and it could have even kill them if their hitpoints were already greatly reduced.

Even if the rock was still smoking, and a player already made it explode once, there was still a chance that it could explode again if the player tried to mine it multiple times.

Pickaxes could have be fixed by Nurmof in the dwarven mines and at Bob's Brilliant Axes in south Lumbridge as well as at the battleaxe shop in Port Sarim. There was no charge for Bronze, Iron & Steel pickaxe repairs, but there was an escalating fee for pickaxes made of Mithril and above. Note that only damaged pickaxes could have been repaired... a broken pickaxe that had a lost handle cannot be fixed by the NPCs. To remedy this situation, you must use the pickaxe handle (not to be confused with a wood axe handle!) on the pickaxe head to fix it.

This event was created to ward off macroers by Jagex. It was one of the many counter-bot measures they have placed on activities that require long work, like fishing and woodcutting.

Trivia

  • Due to this event being discounted, the broken Adamant pickaxe (Named "Broken pickaxe.", including the period) found in the inaccessible part of the temple in Marimbo examine text was changed to "Useless.". Now, it is has been replaced by an undamaged Bronze pickaxe.
