Dr. Garret Sanford accessed the Dream Dimension via his Dream Monitor as part of "Project Sandman." After rescuing the President of the United States from a nightmare monster, Sanford became trapped in the Dream Dimension, allowing him to exist this dimension for only one hour out of every day.[1] He decided to become its protector and named himself Sandman after both "Project Sandman" and the 1940s hero. He was joined in his mission by two creatures named Brute and Glob and by a boy named Jed Paulsen.
Later in his career Sanford interacted with members of the Justice League of America on separate occasions. The first member he met was Wonder Woman, whom he'd grown attracted towards after observing her, although his feelings were not reciprocated. Shortly thereafter, he assisted the Justice League in a case involving Doctor Destiny, at which point he was made an honorary member after turning down full time membership due to his one hour time limitation in the real world.[2]
After several years, Sanford became depressed due to loneliness and committed suicide.[3] Brute and Glob then recruited Hector Hall to serve as the new Sandman. It was later revealed that Sanford and Hall were merely pawns of Brute and Glob, created in an attempt to take over the Dreaming during the long imprisonment of Dream of the Endless, the original being to be named 'The Sandman'. The Dream Dimension was nothing more than a part of the Dreaming created by Brute and Glob inside the mind of Jed Paulsen (now called Jed Walker, brother of Rose Walker and grandson of Desire, and thus Dream's grandnephew).[4]superhuman, limit unknown
