Henry Gale arrived on the Island in a balloon. At some point he died of a broken neck, and Ben took on his identity. Henry was buried in a grave near the balloon, although Ben claimed (in the guise of Henry) that his wife was buried there. Sayid dug up Henry's corpse, uncovering Ben's ruse. In Henry's wallet was a Minnesota driver's license and a $20 bill with a note to his wife written on it. The balloon was sponsored and/or manufactured by Widmore Corporation and Minnesota Metallurgy, of which Henry was the Founder & CEO. It was also sponsored by Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack and Nozz-A-La Cola.

Driver's license

HENRY GALE
815 WALNUT RIDGE ROAD
WAYZATA, MN 55391
License # M152-996-431-000
The real Henry Gale's balloon ("Lockdown")  (promotional still)

Trivia

  • The balloon crash occurred sometime in 2003. This assumes Gale didn't allow his license to expire and that Minnesota has a four-year license renewal period. The $20 bill that Gale had on him was issued on October 9, 2003, according to the serial number on the bill.
  • It is an old version of the Minnesota license (the new version does not use the coding described below and went into production December 15, 2005). The old license uses a system where the first group of 4 characters is Soundex code for the surname of the driver, the second group of 3 is a code for the first name, the third group of 3 are a code for the middle initial. For Henry (no middle) Gale, this should be G400-303-000 (not M152-996-431). The last 3 digits are a coded month and day of birth and should never be 000.
  • According to a list of frequently occurring names from the 1990 Census, only four last names match the soundex M152: MAVINS, MAFNAS, MABINS, and MAUPINS.
  • The codes for the first (996) and middle (431) names correspond to names beginning with "Zwe" and "Joj" respectively. Obviously, these were likely chosen as fakes to avoid hitting a real license number. [Minnesota License Number Generator]
  • The top line of a real license has boxes with various codes and dates. They should be from left to right:
BROWN 6-03 220 M A1 C4 03
EYE COLOR HEIGHT WEIGHT SEX CLASS ISSUED EXPIRES
08-11-64
BIRTH DATE T
  • The license shown by Sayid has the same boxes but the first 3 are not clear and the expires date is only 2 digits.
  • Under these boxes on the real license is a box with date of birth MMDDYYYY in red.
  • The license shown by Sayid shows a date MMDDYY but it is unclear. However, next to Henry's signature you can see 8/11/64 written in ink.
  • Although there is no Walnut Ridge Road in Wayzata, MN, there is a Gale Road in Woodland, MN, which shares the 55391 zip code. A Google map search of 55391 [1] will reveal Gale Road on the peninsula south of Wayzata on Lake Minnetonka.
  • Near Echo Bay on Lake Minnetonka (adjacent to Wayzata) there is a small island which Google Earth previously identified as "Gale Island." Whether this label's removal has anything to do with Lost is unknown.
  • The above could be a dead-end: Not unlike the "555" prefix on TV/movie telephone numbers, apparently realistic information is garbled to prevent real people from putting up with, say, Lost fans driving by their house.
  • "Henry Gale" was the name of Dorothy Gale's Uncle ("Uncle Henry and Auntie Em") in the movie "The Wizard of Oz", which was based on L. Frank Baum's children's book "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", which also featured a balloon as a large device within the narrative. The movie assigns the 'Gale' surname to Uncle Henry (and, by marriage, Aunt Em) via the name on his mailbox, thus implying that Dorothy is the daughter of Henry's brother, but Baum's Oz books never mention Uncle Henry's surname, nor do they make clear whether Uncle Henry or Aunt Em is Dorothy's blood relative.
  • Ben claimed that he found Henry Gale hanging from the basket in the tree; Ben, in turn, was found by Sayid hanging from a net trap in a tree.
  • "Henry Gordon Gale" was an American physicist in the early 1900s who worked at the Mount Wilson Observatory in Pasadena, California. Gale was also editor of the Astrophysical Journal from 1912 to 1940, and authored several books and papers, including First Course in Physics with Robert Millikan, who won a Nobel Prize in 1923 for his work with the electron and the photoelectric effect (which is related to Einstein's theories).
  • This is the first of two characters from "The Wizard of Oz" that Ben is described as, the second being The Man Behind The Curtain, i.e. the Wizard, in the Season 3 episode The Man Behind The Curtain.
  • His smiley faced balloon is a tribute to the Watchmen comic book series, a "Damon Lindelof" favorite.

History

Gale was a physical fitness nut. She was mad, and she had no control on her strength. She was sent to the Ravencroft, Dr. Kafka's treatments helped her to keep the control of her strength.

Gale was in one of the security cells when Shriek was taken to the Institute. Thanks to Barker's emotions, Shriek fed enough to free herself, Gale, and other "guests" of the Institute: Pyromania, Mayhem, and Webber, manipulating all them with her powers. However, Mayhem didn't want to ally with assassins like them, so attacked them with her toxic mist. Gale ripped a big metallic panel from the wall and smashed it on Mayhem, knocking her down. Soon after, she smashed a titanium door with the help of Pyromania's flames and Shriek's energetic blasts.

In the following chamber they found Spider-Man and John Jameson (the security chief) and a fight started. Gale assaulted John Jameson who shot a couple of sedative darts to her, with no effect. Then Jameson run in direction of Shriek, but Gale pursued him. Jameson was tripped up by Webber, but managed to increase the darts sedative level and shot two more darts at Gale. Stunned, she fell on Webber, knocking him down, too.

A few minutes later Gale, Pyromania, and Webber were rising again, and were being again manipulated by Shriek, who changed ideas and directed her energy powers against them. Spider-Man saved them, and after having defeated the shrieking criminal with the help of Jameson, took Gale and the other criminals in their cells.

Powers and Abilities

Strength level

Gale is a normal human, well-trained, with very enhanced muscles and superhuman strength. She could resist sedatives.

From Teletraan I: The Transformers Wiki

Wow, the buildings look like ants from up here...

During a search for the latest Mini-Con, Scavenger and Hot Shot continue their rivalry on an unfinished highway. But who is the mysterious newcomer?

Contents

Summary

Hot Shot pays tribute to his unused mold.

Within The Big City, a mysterious rider on a toyetic purple motorcycle lands from space.

In the Autobot base, Hot Shot is practicing swinging his Star Saber. Billy suspects that since the Star Saber is the most powerful weapon in the universe, Hot Shot, by extension, is the most powerful Transformer. Although Carlos feels that's not exactly how things work. Soon Red Alert comes to tell Hot Shot another Mini-Con has been detected and the males pledge to be Hot Shot's cheerleaders. In the Autobots' main control room, Alexis determines the Mini-Con panel's location in a freeway tunnel in grid sector 29365. The Autobots rush into action and the kids come along too, for cheerleading purposes (with Red Alert's approval).

Already at the scene, Demolishor and Cyclonus guard the outside of the tunnel and see the oncoming Autobots. Inside, Starscream and Megatron oversee Scavenger's digging, who resents having to do this labor.

Little do they realize that the source of Sideways's power is funny-looking hats!

To delay the Autobots, Cyclonus transforms and uses his alt mode to force a civilian truck into lodging itself in the highway horizontally, retarding the flow of traffic. Hot Shot uses Jolt to circumvent this traffic obstacle, while Optimus drops off Billy and Fred, speeding away before noticing the mysterious purple bike drive by to pick up one of the kids.

Cyclonus is chased by Hot Shot (carrying Rad and Carlos), who in turn is being chased down by Scavenger. Hot Shot drops off the kids, transforms, and summons the Star Saber to again engage in Scavenger in direct combat. Cyclonus attempts to take advantage of the fight, by shooting Hot Shot from behind. As soon as Cyclonus misses, the cries of Billy, kidnapped by the motorcyclist, distract everybody.

The motorcyclist stops and lets Billy off so that Billy can hug Rad. (Fred meanwhile, remains alone and unloved.) Then the purple bike returns to the duel between Scavenger and Hot Shot, and with an impressive jump, the bike takes Cyclonus out of the sky. Just then, Alexis, with the Street Action Team, arrives near the duel scene and meets up with Rad, Billy, and Carlos, who she yells at for abandoning her.

Scavenger and Hot Shot finally begin their battle, and Scavenger grabs Hot Shot out of a slow-motion leap and slams the Autobot into the ground. Seeing the unfinished section of the highway, Hot Shot releases the Star Saber Mini-Cons and drives away, and Scavenger chases after him. The motorcyclist continues to follow the fight.

Fred: Still unloved.

Within the tunnel, the Autobots and Decepticons battle, while Hot Shot and Scavenger literally drive right through, and Cyclonus gives up his struggle with Smokescreen to follow the duel. When Scavenger arrives on the incomplete section of the highway, Hot Shot leaps from the sky and lands behind Scavenger. With much vigor, Hot Shot slices the entire section of the road away, causing it to fall. Scavenger just manages to make it back onto the stable section of the road by hanging onto Cyclonus's flying alt mode.

Defeated, Scavenger laughs and berates Hot Shot, saying that he will prove Hot Shot's incompetence another day. At that moment, the motorcyclist also laughs at Hot Shot.

Inside the tunnel, the defeated Decepticons teleport away again. Hot Shot, the kids, and the motorcyclist arrive in the tunnel too. Optimus thanks the stranger, and the bike transforms and introduces himself as Sideways. Smokescreen then announces that he's found the Mini-Con panel, which activates and reveals itself to be Spiral.

The inspiration for Energon's Powerlinxing.

Back at the Autobot base, Billy is riding around with Sideways some more, and Fred accepts an offer (translated by Carlos) to ride on Spiral. Hot Shot and Red Alert agree that Sideways might not be entirely trustworthy. Inside the base, Rad and Alexis also admit to each other that they also get a bad vibe from Sideways. Fred, after riding around on Spiral for a while, inquires regarding the location of the bathroom.

Quotes

"I've got a bad feeling about this."

Alexis, regarding the boys tagging along as Hot Shot's cheer squad. You and me both, sister.

"Lucky for us Scavenger is here to do all the digging, don't you think, Starscream? Otherwise you would be in there getting your hands dirty."
"Right! There's no way you'd catch me playing in the dirt like that."
"If I had known I'd be the only one doing all the work down here, I would have never left Cybertron!"

—Mine boss Megatron with Starscream and Scavenger.

"Billy, Fred - sorry, but it looks like things might get a little dangerous out here. I think it's best if you stay put up here for awhile."
"Aww, gee-whiz! But I thought we were backup?"
"Yeah... well... you can back us up from here! Oh, and stay put!"

Optimus Prime dumps Billy and Fred on the side of the road.
I'm sure this huge motorcycle doesn't attract any attention at all.

"Oh, this really bits big this."
"I told you we should have gone with Hot Shot, but no wouldn't listen, would you, doofus?
(a large purple motorcycle suddenly approaches)
"Huh?"
"Huh??"
"You lookin' to hitch a ride? I got room for one. That's it."
"Hey, B-Billy, that bike-"
"-talked to us!"
"Wait a sec: Autobot or Decepticon?"

Fred and Billy lament being dumped, before the enigmatic Sideways approaches.

"Your battling days are over!"
"Hahaha! I like a bot with a sense of humour!"

Hot Shot lamely trash talks Scavenger.

"Hahahaha! Oh, joy! This is as easy as shooting bots in a barrel! Hahahahaha!"

Cyclonus

"So what happened to Fred?"
"Fred? Oh no! I left him back at the bridge!"
(alone on the highway bridge) "...Billy?"

Rad, Billy and a very alone Fred.

"Remember me?!? I'm Billy's friend!"

Fred's cry of loneliness, after Hot Shot, Scavenger and Sideways pass him without sparing a glance.

"You know, for a great warrior, you're not half as tough as you think you are. So just keep out of my way, or else."
"Hahahahaha!"
"What's so funny?"
"I was laughing at your incompetence. You may have won this little skirmish, but you're still a rank amateur. So don't let this victory swell up your power core because I'm not finished with you yet. Hide behind your little sword, but remember this: you don't have what it takes to use it to its full potential."
"Oh yeah?!?"
"You're just a waste of wires." *wanders off and laughs maniacally*

Hot Shot gloating before Scavenger quickly brings him down to Earth.

"Back on Cybertron they used to call me Sideways. I guess I'm a bit of a drifter. Maybe that's why I'm here."

Sideways's self-introduction to the Autobots.

"Oh, don't worry Hot Shot. You must remember they're only human, and in a couple of days or so, they'll be all over you again."

Red Alert, on the fickle nature of children.

Other Notes

Animation and/or technical glitches

  • After Demolishor reports that the Autobots are closing in on their location, Megatron's left leg is miscoloured grey and red.

Continuity errors

  • In the flashback, Scavenger says "My Star Saber - is undefeatable." which, in the previous episode (presumably Hot Shot's only encounter with Scavenger) he never said. And why would he say that, anyway?
  • Megatron says that Scavenger will keep the Mini-Con he finds as his own; however, in part 4 of the Linkage comic, Scavenger picks up his Mini-Con soon after landing on Earth. Of course, Scavenger might have not revealed Rollbar to Megatron. Or more likely, the translation was entirely unaware of Linkage.
  • Red Alert reports to Optimus Prime that a gridlock (created by Cyclonus) is ahead of them, shortly before spotting the culprit himself. Optimus muses that the Decepticons must have not found the Mini-Con yet, then suddenly states that there is a blockade ahead. What, did he suddenly forget that Red Alert told him about the traffic jam 11 seconds ago?
  • After Hot Shot and Scavenger jump the highway, Hot Shot is seen to land on the ground and quickly transform in a semi-stock animation sequence. He was not shown stopping to disembark Rad and Carlos who were riding inside at the time. However, when Hot Shot and Scavenger prepare to fight, both the kids are now outside watching from afar.
  • Alexis yells at the boys for abandoning her, but it was Optimus who left her alone on the freeway.

Miscellaneous trivia

  • This is the first episode in which the opening introduction does not have Rad narrating.
WTF?
  • This episode is the first time Billy and Fred are seen wearing fashionable Autobot jumpsuits.
  • Just what the heck is Red Alert doing to Starscream during the Decepticon's struggle with Optimus Prime?!?
  • The light shining from the Mini-Con panel bears a striking resemblance to Mercedes' logo, possibly an intentional visual nod since Spiral transforms into a Mercedes C-Class luxury car.
