A couch is an upholstered item of furniture suitable for one or more people to sit on. Couches were in common use throughout the Federation, both by Starfleet and Civilians through to at least the 24th century. The Cardassians used couches as well.
The Sigmund booth had a low ceiling, a pink couch, and resembled a human womb. (TOS novel: Vulcan!)
Cardassian Legate Kell long had a couch made of urall hide, but he eventually replaced it with a couch made of keres hide. (TLE novel: The Art of the Impossible)
A chair is a basic construction that bipedal humanoids use to sit in a resting position. Some species with non-humanoid characteristics use chairs, although some require differing designs of chairs that are incompatible with normal humanoids, like the Deirr of the Deneb system. (TOS - Rihannsu novel: My Enemy, My Ally)
The Tegmenir civilization once acquired a Human chair and made some assumptions of Humanity's nature based on the design. These assumptions were considered rather foolish by members of the Human race. (TOS novel: The Wounded Sky)
House Items are any item that can be placed inside of your house. Commonly called furniture, house items can either be crafted by Carpenters, obtained from Quests, or purchased from NPCs. Rewards from Heritage Quests can be mounted and placed in your house, as well.

Furniture refers to a type of items that members can place in their houses. It is placed on a hotspot in the house. There are different furniture types for different rooms. Some are only to be placed in a certain room, for example a bed can only be placed in a bedroom.
Furniture can also be flatpacked. This is the packing of an object into a tradeable item, so that players can buy furniture that they do not have the Construction level to build, and still put it into their house.
Typical construction materials include:Planks, made from either regular logs, oak logs, teak logs or mahogany logs, which are made into planks at the Sawmill, purchased, or made using the Plank Make spell.; nails, which are smithed yourself or purchased; bolts of cloth which are purchased from the Sawmill; stone materials such as marble blocks, gold leaves, magic stones, and limestone bricks, which are purchased from the Stonemason in Keldagrim; Soft Clay, which is made or purchased; metal bars, espically steel, but including gold and iron, which are made yourself or purchased; and garden plants, which are purchased from the Garden Supplier in Falador.

Furniture is a movable object which may support a humanoid body, provide storage or hold objects on horizontal surfaces above the ground. Furniture can be placed inside a house. Storage furniture can be used to hold other objects. Domestic furniture works to create, in conjunction with decorative art such as lighting and houseplants, comfortable and convenient interior spaces.
Some furniture can be crafted by domestic and structures traders using standard or limited use schematics from various materials, including metal, chemical and wood. Some furniture can be acquired as loot, player rewards or quest rewards. Some furniture can be bought from factional recruiters for faction points.

Furniture items are generally used to furnish or decorate a House or Guildhall. They can be purchased from the Furniture Shopkeeper NPCs found in each town.
Some furniture items (e.g. tables and chairs) come in a furniture package which contains a construction kit for the item. Click "Use" on the furniture package, and it will turn into the item. Once turned into furniture, you can't carry the item anymore. (With some you can.)
