Overview

The friends panel consists of six sections:

• Player status allows you to change your status as displayed in the friends dialog
• Friends Online lists the active accounts you have chosen as friends
• Friends Offline lists the inactive accounts you have chosen as friends
• Ignored lists all the accounts, regardless of status, you have chosen to ignore
• Recent Teammates lists the recent teammates
• Recent Trade Partners lists the recent trade partners

Head icons: Each name has a small head-shaped icon beside it. Clicking on this gives you more options; you can move a name between "Friends" and "Ignore" or remove their name altogether.

Player status

Using the player status dropdown list at the top of the friends window you can show your friends that you are online, offline, away, or do not wish to be disturbed:

• Online is the normal status. You are set to online by default when logged in.
• Away shows people who whisper you a message stating you may not reply because you are away.
• Do not disturb refuses whispers.
• Offline shows you as offline on other peoples' friends lists. You can still send whispers but cannot receive them.

Friends List

The Friends List is a personal list of other players, viewed by pressing N. To add someone to your list, click on the box with the message "Click here to add a friend" and type in their name.

If they are logged in with another character on that account, that character's name will be displayed in parenthesis next the character name you initially added. The friends list can hold 50 names.

Players added to your friends list will not show up in Recent Teammates or in Recent Trade.

Note: You don't have to add a person to the Friends List to send them a whisper, tell, or PM.

Ignore list

The Ignore list allows you to add players (character names) of people whom you do not wish to hear from, for whatever reason. Adding a person to your ignore list blocks all messages from that person, and prevents his/her text from appearing in your chat windows.

No status will be displayed for these accounts, and no other character names will be displayed. The ignore list can hold 10 names.

If a player you have on your ignore list tries to whisper you, he or she will receive a message in green text: {Your Character's Name} is ignoring you.

Recent Teammates

The Recent Teammates list allows you to see players that played with you in your current gaming session that are not in your friends list.

Recent Trade Partners

The Recent Trade Partners list allows you to see players that exchange objects via the Trade Window with you in your current gaming session.

Notes

• If you try to add a character name that does not exist to your friends/ignore list, a red message will briefly show: The character name "<character's name>" does not exist.
• The ignore list currently does not appear to affect allies in Alliance Battle missions. Even after adding someone, you will still be able to see his text to the main and ally chat windows.
• The behavior of the ignore list with guild or alliance members is not well understood, though some testing within alliance chat shows that the ignore option works normally with members of different guilds who are in the same alliance.

After performing so many missions for specific characters, eventually they will become Niko Bellic's friend. After becoming friends, the player may engage in specific activities with that character, including bowling, going to a strip club, and going for a Pißwasser beer. From that point onward, the player may either call their friend on Niko's Cell Phone or send emails to hang out. Hanging out with friends is a fun way to work on relationships with certain characters so that eventually their "friend benefits" are unlocked. Niko can also increase his friendships through certain storyline missions.

Activities

• Get a bite to eat; this can be done at any Burger Shot, Cluckin' Bell and Pizza This branch throughout Liberty City, and also other diners, cafes and restaurants that become available while you're out with a friend.
• Drinking at the bars in Hove Beach (Broker), Steinway (Dukes), Purgatory (Algonquin), or Hatton Gardens (Algonquin). Being seen driving drunk will attract Wanted stars; it's best to take a taxi. It may take more than one try to hail a cab whilst drunk, as the taxi driver may not respond to your calls.
• Go bowling in the alleys at Purgatory (Algonquin) or Firefly Island (Broker).
• Play Pool in Schottler (Broker) or at Playboy X's loft (if available; see spoilers below).
• Throw some darts at the Irish/German Pub in Steinway (Dukes) or in Purgatory (Algonquin).
• Visit a strip club - There are The Triangle Club in Northern Gardens (Bohan), and Honkers Gentlemen's Club in Tudor (Alderney). Lapdances are available in strip clubs.
• Visit the Cabaret Club in Hove Beach (Broker) or the Comedy Club, Split Sides, in Star Junction (Algonquin) to catch a show.
• You can go with Brucie Kibbutz and two of his lady friends on helicopter and boat trips throughout Liberty City.
• Occasionally you will be called to give someone a lift; this usually happens when a friend gets injured.

Benefits

Like girlfriends in previous GTA games, friends provide special benefits if their "like" percentage reaches 80% (they will call you to offer their particular ability). You can lose these benefits if their "like" percentage fall below 80%; when you raise the level again, you will get a text message.

Note: Sometimes a friend's benefit will not be available, due to excessive use or being blocked during certain missions.

• Little Jacob - Drives to a secluded location near the player; his car's trunk is full of guns to purchase at a discount (60% off). Niko can do this during a mission. The best times to call for activities are between 1pm - 4am.
• Brucie Kibbutz - Picks Niko up with his helicopter, and transports him to designated landing zones around the city (Niko will have to meet him at these points). The best times to call for activities are between 7am - 1am.
• Roman Bellic- Sends a cab to pick Niko up and take him anywhere for free (albeit at the driver's annoyance). Following Roman's Sorrow, this benefit will be unavailable for several missions (as his depot has been burned down). The car service will be avaliable after completion of the mission Blow Your Cover, when Roman buys a new fleet of cabs. After Mallorie calls to report Roman missing, Niko cannot hang out with him or call for a taxi until he rescues Roman in "Hostile Negotiation". Roman is available at all times for activities.
• Dwayne Forge - Sends a car with two armed men who will follow and help Niko in combat. In order to unlock his friendship, the player must allow him to live in The Holland Play, and later respond positively to an e-mail he will send (some time after this he will invite Niko out). The best times to call for activities are between 11am - 3am. Sparing Dwayne also allows use of Playboy X's loft apartment, including its pool table.
• Patrick McReary - Supplies Niko with a car bomb which can be placed under any car and detonated using Niko's phone. The best times to call for activities are between 3pm - 6am.

The Friends List can be used to send private messages to other players, including moderators, and to see which worlds they are currently on. If a player's private chat is set to 'off', then they will always appear as offline and it will not be possible to send them a private message. If their private chat is set to 'friends', then only people on their Friends List will be able to send them private messages.If you do attempt to send a message and as you press enter they log out, it will say this player has left the server

To add a player to the Friends List, click the 'add friend' button in the Friends List interface, type the player's name, and press enter or simply right-click their name in the chat box and selecting 'add friend'.

To delete a player from the Friends List, either right-click their name on the Friends List and click 'remove', or click the 'del friend' button, type their name and press enter. The friends list can hold up to 100 names for free players, and 200 for members.

If a player meets one of his/her friends in-game, the friend's character will be represented by a green dot on the minimap in the upper right corner of the screen, instead of a white dot like most other players.

Some players add "famous" players, such as top people on the high-scores to their friend lists. However, the player has a very little chance to see the top player, because the top player’s friend list is most likely full. Most "famous" players also have their own Private chat set to "Friends", so anyone not on their Friends List will not be able to send them private chat.

The Friends List is not always used for contacting or keeping track of friends. Some players might add another player's name to their Friends List to spy on them, or to locate them on the minimap for a trade opportunity, although this would only be possible if the other player had private chat set to 'on'.

Some players may spam via private chat, so it is useful if one turns their private chat to “friends” or "off".

An update on 8 July 2009 made it impossible to add friends to your friend list that don't exist. All bad names in the list at the time of the update got an asterisk.

An update on 12 November 2009, the divider between both usernames/friends and the status is movable. This is to view the username/friends full name. If the divider was over the usernames/friends, it would show somewhat like this "CutOffName..."

Colours of the names

• Green means the player is online, and in the same world.
• Yellow means the player is online, but in a different world, or in a Funorb game.
• Red means the player is offline, or has their private chat set to "friends" (if you are not on their friends list), or "off".

• On the 8th of July, along with the Mobilising Armies update, the friends list icon has an update to its appearance.
• On the 8th of July, along with the Mobilising Armies update, players had the ability to add themselves to both their friends and ignore lists by typing in their username with an added space (EX:"Username_"). It has since been fixed though players who added themselves to their friend's list during the time have not had their name removed.
• If a player had his or her named added to their friends list, they would not be able to access FunOrb games as the server would crash. This could be corrected by logging into RuneScape and deleting their username from their friends list.
• Some players have a glitch where even if someone they added to their friends list is online, it might say they are offline, the added player may still Private Message the glitched player.
• After a update on the 2 September 2009, a friend list glitch occurred, saying to some players that their friend wasn't online when they were and had private chat "on". The cause of this is unknown, however might have something do with self adding, also saying that a friend on the same world is on a different world.

Playing the game without friends will probably get boring after a while. Friends can be very handy in tight situation, namely missions that are too hard for the player. Hopefully they will be kind and help. You can team up with them to do all sorts of missions, or going around the town attacking enemies. However, doing a mission of a high level player will make the enemies high levelled, therefore may be hard for the lower levels to kill. In this case, making them a Lackey would be worthwhile. A team with more members in will produce a mission with more enemies in.

To add a character to your server friends list, perform one of the following actions:

• Right click on the character and select "Add Friend."
• Right click the name of the character in your Team Window and select "Add Friend."
• Target the character and select "Add Friend" from the Action Window.
• Type the following command into the chat line:

/friend <character_name>
