Free Comic Book Day, aka FCBD, occurs every first Saturday in May. Participating comic book shops in North America (and other places around the globe) give away comic books. These comics are completely free -- no strings attached! This annual event began in 2002 and has seen an increase in interest over the past years. It is administered by a panel which represents all parts of the comic book industry: retailers, publishers, suppliers, and Diamond Comic Distributors.
Each year, publishers apply to provide comic books at cost to retailers, who in turn give them away for free. Diamond handles marketing and logistics for the event, shipping comics to shops and handling marketing and PR for the event. The event is not solely giving out Marvel related comics, so be sure to get your favorite publisher's comics. For a list of other publisher's comics, check out FreeComicBookDay.com.
Your local convenience and grocery stores will most likely not carry these comics. You can find a local comic book store by visiting: Comic Shop Locater or by calling 1-888-Comic-Book, to find the store nearest you. Comics are normally handed out till supplies are diminished. So be sure to call ahead if you are worried about getting your free comic.
