Fred Ferris (13th July, 1905 - 25th January, 1978) played Mr. Appleby, Colin Appleby's father who had the task of telling his daughter-in-law Christine Appleby that her husband had been killed in a car crash when he appeared in Coronation Street in 1962.

Born in Liverpool, the former comic appeared in many television series in the 1960s including The Avengers, Z Cars, No Hiding Place and Doctor Who.
