Fortune Teller
First appearance 16th October 1961
Duration 1961
Played by Julie Perry

The Fortune Teller, advertising under the name of "Gypsy Smith" was a woman in a booth on Blackpool promenade who read the fortunes of Minnie Caldwell and Ena Sharples when they visited the resort as part of a coach trip to see the illuminations. She told Minnie that she would have a "visitor from the skies - like a bolt out of the blue" and then told Ena that she was going on "a long, lonely journey" with a long separation from her friends. Subsequently Ena missed the coach back to Coronation Street and had to make her way back on a potato lorry. Minnie's prediction also came true when a slate fell off the roof of No.13 and hit her on the head.

Race:
Home Planet: Shan Shen (?)
Home Era:
Appearances: DW: Turn Left
Actor: Chipo Chung

The Fortune Teller, on the planet Shan Shen once offered to foretell Donna Noble's future, but instead seemed more interested in manipulating her past. Her suggestion that Donna should turn away from her fateful first day at H.C. Clements forced Donna's past to change, and created a parallel world in which the Doctor was killed during his encounter with the Empress of the Racnoss (DW: Turn Left).

Her fate is unknown; she fled after Donna (with the aid of Rose Tyler) was able to restore the proper timeline, terrified that Donna had managed to overcome the Time Beetle.

Behind the Scenes

She may have been a member of the Trickster's Brigade, as she urged Donna to ponder her choices and was familiar enough with the Time Beetle's abilities that she called Donna "so strong" to have resisted it.

Shiro, after this unbelievable turn of events, returns to the Fortune Teller yet again to know more of his fate. However, the old woman then warns Shiro that Emperor Angsiyan is going to kill him during the Harvest Ceremony at Kuan Jun Temple. She predicts that the Emperor will kill him, if he does not kill the Emperor first. Shiro is outraged by this, and murders the Fortune Teller.

Her predictions still echo in his mind later on when he is trying to decide whether or not he should kill the Emperor to save his own life.

Shiro eventually decides to murder the Emperor. Shiro is then killed by Archemorus, Saint Viktor, and Vizu.

The Fortune Teller makes a reappearance in the Nightfall campaign - the optional quest Bad Fortune allows players to track her down and destroy her once and for all. This quest also states that she was a demonic agent of Abaddon who manipulated Shiro into assassinating his Emperor and corrupted his soul. It does not reveal why, however.

Notes

  • It is recommended that, after defeating her first form, human players pull back. The players should rest and wait for her demon-form and demon allies to spawn, before fighting again.
  • Alternatively, you can concentrate fire on her, it is possible to kill her and finish the quest before her allies start attacking you.

Trivia

  • It is likely that the Fortune Teller's warning to Shiro, "Beware the Harvest Ceremony" was inspired by Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. In the play, a fortune teller tells Caesar to "Beware the Ides of March."
