Memory Beta, the wiki for licensed Star Trek content.

Flax was a Ferengi male, and only son of Bok, who lived in the 24th century.

From a young age it became obvious to Flax that his father wanted him to follow in his footsteps. Through bribery Flax was always assigned the best and most expensive tutors, and Bok's bribery continued as Flax moved up the chain of command until he was finally promoted to DaiMon and granted command of the Raider-class scout, Seventy-Fifth Rule in 2355.

On his first mission as daiMon, Flax took the Seventy-Fifth Rule into the Maxia Zeta star system on a survey mission. What they discovered was a system full of mineral-rich planets which contained elements such as dilithium, latinum and verterium. Flax believed that the Great River had indeed been kind to him and with this discovery he could gain a large percentage of the wealth that the system would provide for the Ferengi Alliance.

Unfortunately, Flax was unable to see any of his plans come to fruition as the Federation starship, USS Stargazer was also on a survey mission in the system and was approaching the Seventy-Fifth Rule's position in orbit of Maxia Zeta V. As the Stargazer had yet to have detected the Ferengi scout, Flax decided to launch an attack upon the vessel.

The initial attack proved very successful and the Stargazer was seriously damaged, and destruction seemed a distinct possibility. Unfortunately, the ingenuity of Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Stargazer in tricking the Seventy-Fifth Rule's by initiating a warp jump and fooling their sensors, led to the destruction Ferengi vessel and Flax's death by a salvo of phaser fire and six photon torpedoes. There's nothing special about the Flax Stem except that it is able to return to its original shape after bending up 7 times. And so this fiber is equally flexible.

Flax grows wild around Gielinor - this field is between Seers' Village and Catherby

Flax is a plant that members with level 10 Crafting can use on a spinning wheel to create a bow string, granting 15 Crafting experience. It is possible to pick multiple flax from one plant, about 1-28.

Flax can be found in various places in members-only areas. Flax plants can be found:

  • In Taverley flower patches, they are hard to see, but there are at least 2 plants in every patch.
  • In the Tree Gnome Stronghold (there is a bank in the middle of several flax plants).
  • South of Seers' Village, there are a lot of plants in a reasonably small area.
  • Just south of the bank in Lletya (closest to a bank, but difficult to get to)
  • South of Relleka, near the Fenris wolves
  • On Lunar Isle

It is quite a useful item because once it is spun into a bow string, it can be used to string bows using Fletching, and bow strings sell for a fair bit. However, It is not very easy to sell flax for quick money, so players are advised to turn them into bow strings first to gain more money.

Flax used to be a common target for macroing programs, where they collected flax in Seers' Village and then spun them into bow strings in Lumbridge castle, due to the profit margin for bow strings and that flax could easily be collected in bulk. This is now significantly reduced due to Jagex's fight against unbalanced trade and real-world trading.

The macroing programs that picked flax became a target for luring that Jagex actually supported. Players would dress in clothing such as green dragonhide, and stand near macros. With a little coordination, a player could get the macro program to think that the player was a flax plant. Once the bot was following the player, it could be lured into a group of aggressive monsters. However, due to an update by Jagex, it is almost impossible to find a bot picking flax.

A player picking flax.

One player has reported a glitch where he kept getting flax with repetitive clicking even when the plant disappeared, also this has yet to be confirmed and is likely just a rumour.

Strategies

  • Arguably, the best place to pick flax would be in Lletya, because the flax field is very close to the bank, about 10 spaces away. The only downside is that the player has to begin Mourning's Ends Part I first to enter Lletya.
  • After this, the flax in Tree Gnome Stronghold is the best option, as it is accessible to all members, and is very close to the bank that is West of the Agility course.
  • Although farther from the bank, the field south-east of Seers' Village is another option, accessible to all members as well and quite close to the banks in Seers' Village and Catherby. This field used to be a hot-spot for macroers; however, this is no longer an issue due to the updates that removed unbalanced trade.
  • The Player's avatar picks flax faster than the picking animation.
  • If the player plans on turning it into something, such as bowstring, there is a spinning wheel near the Seers' Village flax field that is fairly close to a bank.
  • The best place to spin flax into bowstrings is at Neitiznot. The wheel is one click away from the bank and the door is always open. The bank is also a one-click bank.
The flax field in Lletya, which is very close to the bank.
  • The flax plants in the Taverley flower patches are located at the south end of the flower patch with the fountain and in the flower patch just south of the fountain patch. The Falador bank is fairly close.
  • If the player completes the Seers' Village Diary, they can receive 30, 60 or 120 free flax daily from Geoffrey upon completion of the corresponding sets of tasks and talks to him wearing the Seers' Headband. Wearing the fully upgraded headband allows for faster flax spinning at the Seers' Village spinning wheel, making it faster overall than Neitiznot.

Affiliation

Flax was a tectonically active planet in the Ptera system of the Sumitra sector. Most of the surface's land masses were desert due to the high coastal mountain ranges which prevented atmospheric transference of moisture from the seas.

The native insectoid species, the Flakax, lived in underground hives on the planet. After Flax was conquered by the Empire sometime before the destruction of the first Death Star, they were declared slave workers and were put to work mining the planet's ores.

The planet was later one of the Galactic Alliance planets threatened by a possible Killik coup.
