Fire surge is the most powerful fire spell and strongest of the combat spells in the standard spellbook, and it requires 95 Magic to be cast. It deals a maximum damage of 28 (without boost), 30 (with a magic damage-boosting staff), 33 (with extreme magic/overload) and 37 (with both extreme magic/overload and a magic damage-boosting staff).This spell has been observed to hit up to 33 only with the damage boosting staff, in Barbarian Assault. This spell was introduced with the 17 November 2009 update.

While it is an incredibly powerful spell, all three of the god spells can still deal more damage if one is using the Charge spell while wearing a god cape (this increases the maximum damage to 30). The god spells are just about the same price as fire surge, so if one has access to these spells, they are recommended in most circumstances. However, the God spells, apart from Claws of Guthix (which can be cast using the Void Knight Mace) require God Staffs so you can't wield a 10% boost staff (Ancient staff, Ahrim's staff or Master Wand). If a player uses an extreme magic (or overload) potion it is recommended the player uses Fire Surge, so they can also obtain a 10% magic damage bonus from the staff.

Fire Surge costs 816 coins for each cast. If using an air staff, the price is reduced to 732 coins per cast. If using a fire staff, the price is reduced to 766 coins per cast.
