Feathers are produced by avian-species for a variety of purposes, including, protection, display, and for flight. In return, many humanoid species have also found various ways to use their feathers.
The mysterious Phoenix eagles would grant one of their primary feathers to an individual they recognized as being a mature person. In the 23rd century, Starfleet Captain Hunter and her aunt were both awarded with feathers. (TOS novel: The Entropy Effect).

Feathers are used in the Fishing and Fletching skills. In fishing, feathers are used as bait for fly fishing. In fletching, feathers are used to make arrows, darts, and bolts.
Feathers may also be used as bait for Barbarian heavy-rod fishing, but it is cheaper to use fishing bait.

Feathers can be bought at a number of stores across RuneScape and can also be obtained as drops from many monsters, most notably chickens. They can of course also be bought from players. In the Grand Exchange, 10,000 feathers may be bought every 4 hours. Feathers can also be obtained by killing chickens, which drop them in amounts of 5 and 15. This is a commonly used alching item, but for players seeking profit from Alching, this is not advised.
Coloured feathers can be attained from snaring birds using the Hunter skill.
All but one of these shops have 1,000 feathers in stock for 6 coins each, increasing to 7 coins each.
Feathers used to be available in infinite quantity for 6 coins each from many shops, but due to the personalised shop update in September 2009, feathers were able to rise in price in the Grand Exchange to above 6 coins each.
When killing chickens, if you see the feathers on top of the raw chicken, you will get 15, and if the feathers are underneath, you will get 5.
