First appearance

Reed Richards was a brilliant scientist working on an experimental rocket for space exploration. However, funding was cut for his project and so he, his best friend Ben Grimm, his girlfriend Sue Storm and Sue's brother Jonny went up in the rocket. Bombarded by unusual cosmic rays, the crew brought the ship down. They soon discovered that they had all changed, gained fantastic powers. They vowed to use their powers to challenge the unknown and protect humanity as the Fantastic Four.

Over the years the Fantastic Four went through many secondary members, but the primary four remained the core of the team. Also, they went through a lot of personal changes. Reed and Sue were wed and had a child, Franklin. Johnny also wed, Alicia, a former flame of Ben's who was revealed not to be Alica at all but a Skrull impersonating her. And the team became world wide celebrities, often known as the "First Family of super-heroics."

Nowadays, they're the Fantastic Five and they're still one of the premier super-teams on the planet, based out of the Five Freedoms Plaza in New York. When Dr Doom was sighted in Latveria, the United Nations asked the F5 to investigate. But, as a favour to Stinger, who had lived with them for a time when her father worked for them, they allowed the Avengers to take their place.
