Black Thorn was a wealthy young CIA operative who retired to become a masked crime-fighter. She believed that working for the law didn't allow her the same freedom to fight for justice that she might be able to obtain outside of it. Her career is modeled after heroes like
Batman who she studied intensely, in addition to her martial arts and espionage training. Thorne operated actively in the streets of
New York City with the hopes that she might someday be able to meet Adrian Chase,
the Vigilante, and have him become her mentor. They developed a close working relationship, and even became lovers at one point. Although his eventual suicide was devastating for her, it strengthened her resolve as a hero, and drove her even deeper into dedication towards her line of work. She has been shown as a
Checkmate operative, still active in the espionage community, and continues working to this day.
