The "economist" was an associate of Charles Widmore who employed Elsa to get information about Ben from Sayid. He was on a list of people for Sayid to kill for Ben, because they "posed a threat" to the Oceanic Six.

Elsa claimed that he "worked in emerging markets," but according to Sayid, he was not truly an economist. Elsa said that he was very old fashioned in his business, as evidenced by his use of a pager. She explained that he was an innocent man, but it became clear that he was not (as he hired Elsa to spy on Sayid). ("The Economist") The economist, Mr. Avellino, and Ivan Andropov were on Ben's list of targets for Sayid.

Upon killing Mr. Andropov, Sayid was told by Ben that he had successfully completed his mission to kill everyone on the list. Therefore, the economist is presumably dead. ("He's Our You")

  • Why would he only communicate by pager (apart from trying to trap Sayid)?
