From Final Fantasy Wiki

Eater is a recurring ability throughout the entire series, and refers to often to the ability of absorbing elemental attacks and converting the damage to HP recovery. Although the ability was not given a name until Final Fantasy X, it has been a predominant ability and a rather crucial ability throughout the series, especially against enemies and bosses of particular elements that can only use attacks of that element, and by using an Eater ability against said enemies and bosses, renders them completely harmless. The following are all Eater abilities:

  • Fire Eater - Absorbs Fire elemental attacks.
  • Ice Eater - Absorbs Ice elemental attacks.
  • Lightning Eater - Absorbs Lightning elemental attacks.
  • Water Eater - Absorbs Water elemental attacks.
  • Gravity Eater - Absorbs Gravity elemental attacks. The only time this ability has appeared is in Final Fantasy X-2.
  • Holy Eater - Absorbs Holy elemental attacks.
  • Tetra Eater - Absorbs Fire, Ice, Lightning, and Water elemental attacks. This ability only appears in Final Fantasy X-2.
  • Omni Eater - Absorbs Fire, Ice, Lightning, Water, Holy, and Gravity elemental attacks. This ability has only appeared once, and that being Final Fantasy X-2.

The following are not named in any game, and thus the names are simply to keep in style with the current names:

  • Earth Eater - Absorbs Earth elemental attacks. Appears in Final Fantasy IX.
  • Shadow Eater - Absorbs Shadow elemental attacks. Appears in Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy XII.
  • Wind Eater - Absorbs Wind elemental attacks. Appears in Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy XII.
  • Poison Eater - Absorbs Poison elemental attacks. Appears in Final Fantasy VII by equipping the Poison materia with a maxed level Elemental materia into a character's armor together.
