History

Years ago, an artificial gravity well known as a Sun-Eater arrived in Dusk's home star system and consumed the sun, thereby destroying all life in that system. Dusk was one of the few who managed to escape from her planet and flee to another star system. Knowing that the Sun-Eater would not stop with merely one system, Dusk traveled from galaxy to galaxy, warning other planets of the approach of the Sun-Eater. Time after time, she was forced to stand by, helpless as the Sun-Eater continued on its course, absorbing solar energy, resulting in the deaths of untold billions.

Eventually, her journey brought her to the planet Earth. She crashed her ship in the Metropolis River and warned Earth's populace of the coming of the Sun-Eater. To her surprise, Earth was populated with super-powered beings, who might stand a chance of preventing yet another extinction-level event. For the first time in a long time, Dusk found a glimmer of hope.

A convention of super-heroes was assembled, and Dusk provided them with as much information as possible about the Sun-Eater. It did little good however. The Sun-Eater arrived in the Sol system and snuffed out Earth's sun. The people of Earth had less than a week before all life would be extinguished from the planet.

Dusk wandered the streets of Metropolis as fear and discord began to grip the civilian populace. Riots broke out and people grew cold and hungry. Many of them blamed Dusk for bringing the Sun-Eater to Earth – an inaccurate, yet reasonable fear. A throng of hungry, desperate people attacked her, and Dusk likely would have died but for the timely intervention of the Phantom Stranger. Enraged by their savagery, Dusk remarked that the people of Earth deserved everything that was coming to them. The Phantom Stranger explained that desperate circumstances such as this one, often brought out the worst in humanity, but it also brought out the best. He led Dusk on a journey across the globe, showing her examples of people helping others in need, and holding onto hope. Dusk developed a new appreciation for Earth's native cultures, and was touched by their bravery and heroism.

It is possible to taunt her into threatening the player. However, when the player meets her at the area she told them to ("In the den after lights out"), nothing happens.

During the quest Take it Back! she can be seen at the Citadel entrance, picking off Enclave Soldiers with her Sniper Rifle.

A certain conversation path will reveal that her true name is "Dawn," and becomes defensive over the obvious irony.

She can also be asked about Knight Captain Gallows, starting the unmarked quest Gallows Humor.

The UNSC Dusk was a Prowler of the UNSC Navy. It was assigned to the Home Fleet [3].

Contents

Background

Unlike many other prowlers in service, the Dusk was manned and operated by regular naval (instead of ONI) personnel. Prior to the Battle of Earth, she had seen eighteen months of constant action[4].

Battle of Earth

The Dusk was in Earth orbit when the Battle of Earth occurred. She was caught between rotations and was forced to engage with only 43 of a normal complement of 90 crewmen[5]. When the UNSC In Amber Clad pursued the Assault Carrier of the Prophet of Regret, the Dusk was one of four ships in a position to follow. However, only the Dusk was able to catch the slipspace wake caused by the carrier. Her companions, the UNSC Coral Sea, the UNSC Paris, and the UNSC Redoubtable moved further ahead in the slipstream and were lost.

Installation 05

As a result, by the time they arrived at Installation 05, the In Amber Clad had been destroyed, and the Civil War of the Covenant had already begun. After observing the Second Fleet of Homogenous Clarity destroy itself, the Dusk and her companions returned to Earth via slipspace.[6]

Deployment to Onyx

Upon returning to Earth, the Dusk was caught in the space battle unfolding in orbit, but was redeployed to Onyx in support of Battlegroup Stalingrad following the reception of Dr. Catherine Halsey's distress signal. Not involved in direct combat during the Battle of Onyx, the only part the Dusk participated in the Battle was the laying of Hornet mines which provided some support. The Dusk survived the destruction of the battle group by Covenant forces.

While the remaining Covenant ships were being destroyed by Sentinels, the Dusk was attempting to escape the system and return back to Earth[7]. It is unknown whether or not she escaped. However, evidence suggests she did escape and return to Earth.

Armament

It carried several ordnance configurations, such as BLACK WIDOW COMSats[8] and HORNET Mines.[9]
