A dragon scimitar.

The Dragon Scimitar is currently the strongest scimitar in the game, and can only be wielded by members who have at least 60 Attack and who have completed the Monkey Madness quest, a long and difficult quest set on the dangerous island of Ape Atoll. It can be bought for 100,000 coins at Daga's Scimitar Smithy's shop on Ape Atoll, though it is advised to buy it at the Grand Exchange instead. Although it is cheaper and can sometimes be faster to buy at Daga's Scimitar Smithy's shop, the high possibility of being attacked and dying on the island is not worth it. It is strongly recommended that a greegree be used to make the trip to the stall safely if you are buying it from the stall, because scorpions, spiders and other monkeys will not attack when wielding a greegree. A monkeyspeak amulet does not need to be worn if you right-click trade on Daga.

The Dragon Scimitar has a special attack, Sever, which, along with increasing the user's accuracy for that hit, has the chance of rendering the target unable to use protection prayers (with the exception of the Protect Item prayer) for five seconds. This uses 55% of the user's special attack energy. Most notably, the special attack deactivates the protection prayer altogether. The opponent must reactivate the prayer after 5 seconds are over. However, this effect doesn't work on NPCs (such as the Kalphite Queen), and as such is hardly used, and can be seen rarely in Castle Wars, Fist of Guthix and other PVP minigames where Prayer is commonly used.

The scimitar is popular for Strength training, as it has comparable bonuses to the Dragon longsword, but is slightly faster. It is nearly tied with the Obsidian sword when used in conjunction with a Berserker necklace in terms of hourly experience rates; however, the Obsidian sword and Berserker necklace are much more the more expensive and reduce attack and defence statistics, when used together.

As with all Dragon equipment (except the Dragon platebody and the Dragon sq shield), this item cannot be made using the Smithing skill.

Merchanting

The Dragon scimitar is one of the most reliable items to merchant. Because there is much greater demand for the scimitar than there is supply, it is usually impossible to buy one instantly on the Grand Exchange - most offers will take hours to go through. However, because the price is fixed at 100,200 coins, their Grand Exchange price never rises to meet the demand. There is usually a strong market for dragon scimitars sold at a premium around the Grand Exchange in heavily populated worlds. It is fairly easy to sell a dragon scimitar for between 110,000 and 120,000 coins within a minute or two in such areas. A common and useful method of earning money is to purchase several dragon scimitars from the Grand Exchange at maximum price and resell them in trades for profit. However, this may require a fair number of quest points to allow for the seller to receive wealth consistently.

Trivia

  • The Dragon Scimitar was not actually released until almost four months after the Monkey Madness quest, on 29 March 2005. Six days later on 4 April, it was announced that the special attack of the Dragon Scimitar was not working as intended and could not be fixed. It was changed to the current special attack on that day.
  • The Dragon Scimitar is a weapon commonly used in PVP worlds, usually by Pures. They hit fast, strong and are often used in conjunction with a Dragon Dagger.
  • On 23 July 2009, five days before the scheduled update, the Dragon scimitar image in the Grand Exchange Database was replaced by the new model. Players found the image and posted about it in the RuneScape Forums, making it widely known before Jagex removed the image a few hours later. Five days later, the image was once again put up along with the official release.
  • On 28 July 2009, the Animation Pack 1 update changed the appearance and attack animations of the Dragon Scimitar to what it currently is today, along with Godswords, Longswords, and the Abyssal whip. The old inventory icon of the Dragon Scimitar was File:Dragon scimitar.png.
  • On 10 August 2009, an update enlarged the blade of the Dragon scimitar and gave it a more red-plastic colour and a shiny effect, along with the Dragon longsword
  • The Dragon Scimitar is most recommended in Barbarian Assault, because it has all combat styles. However, the Dragon longsword has slightly better stats and has all combat styles as well, but is slower.
  • If you talk to Zeke, the scimitar seller of Al Kharid, and ask him for a Dragon scimitar he responds, "The banana-brained nitwits who make them would never sell any to me. Seriously, you'll be a monkey's uncle before you hold a Dragon Scimitar." After completing the Monkey Madness quest the conversation changes a bit and you say "Funny you should mention that." In the quest, you tell the Monkey Child that you are his uncle, making you a monkey's uncle.
  • The corrupt Dragon scimitar image and look was not changed with the update on 28 July 2009.
  • On 9th November 2009, a glitch was found where the Scimitar and Longsword became transparent where the shiny part of it is supposed to be. Jagex still hasn't fixed this.
