Interactions with the player character

The player can trade with him and get medical supplies. You can also ask for chems, but he refuses. In his room, he has a terminal that has some medical information on some of the people of Rivet City. In Broken Steel if the player put the Modified FEV in Project Purity he informs the player that Rivet City is burning corpses.

Daily schedule

Dr. Preston can be found in Rivet City Clinic on the Upper Deck during most of the day.

Terminal Information

  • Regional Health Hazards
Apart from the standard dangers, Rivet City provides a few uncommon problems for long-time residents:
  • Lockjaw: Muscle spasms, especially of the jaw, from getting cuts on the rusty ship hull. Treat with penicillin, when available.
  • Red-lung: Respiratory problems from regularly inhaling rust particles - particularly a problem for hangar deck residents and shut-ins. Treat with steam therapy and time outside to flush system.
  • Fish poisoning: Less of a problem nowadays, but occasionally someone finds a fish in the river and is dumb enough to try to eat the thing. Radiation levels spike and mercury poisoning drives most victims crazy. No cure, but at least people nearby get a reminder not to do it.

Notes

  • It is possible that Dr. Preston will randomly show up in the tunnels during the quest The Waters of Life when escaping from the Enclave, and follow you through the tunnels. Once you arrive at the exit near the Citadel, he will head back toward Rivet City.
  • Preston cannot be killed. Instead, he is rendered "unconscious" whenever his HP is depleted. Some characters who have an important role in the plot are rendered essential, but Dr. Preston has very little role in the story. He is likely essential so the player has at least 1 doctor available at all times, similar to Shrapnel probably being essential so the player has 1 weapons merchant.
  • If you have the "Contract Killer" perk, then you can render him unconsious. When he awakes, he will have an ear in his inventory. You can do this as much as you like.
  • If you have the "Lawbringer" perk, you can kill the patient in his office for a finger. It is currently unknown as to why the patient is an "Evil" character and if you are seen killing him Docter Preston will start attacking you.

Behind the scenes

  • If you ask Dr. Preston, "Got any Chems? I could really use a fix." He will reply with, "...I'm a doctor, not a dealer". A homage to Bones from the original Startrek series.
  • Ted Strayer and Dr. Preston, both of whom are residents of Rivet City, may be references to the protagonists of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Bill S. Preston and Theodore (Ted) Logan. Ted Strayer's addiction to Chems and his laid-back attitude seem to back up this theory.

Appearances

Preston only appears in Fallout 3.
