According to Reilly's Terminal, Donovan is 35 years old.

Interactions with the player character

If Donovan doesn't die during the Reilly's Rangers (quest) he will return to the Ranger Compound where he can repair your gear for less than the cost other merchants would charge.

Quest: Reilly's Rangers

Main article: Reilly's Rangers

Donovan holds the wrench, a quest item used for repairing the elevator in the Statesman Hotel.

Random Encounter: The Lone Ranger

You can encounter Donovan while traveling through the Capital Wasteland. Soon after he appears he should engage in a firefight against 3 Super Mutants (these can be Super Mutant Brutes or Super Mutant Masters at higher levels). When you talk to him, he will either thank you for your assistance (if you helped him kill the Super Mutants) or lightly chastise you for just watching the fight (if you don't assist him or talk to him before the Super Mutants appear). Regardless, he will give you a Mini Nuke and say that Reilly sent him.

After speaking with you, Donovan will make his way back to the Ranger Compound.

  • If the rangers are hostile to you, then Donovan will immediately begin shooting upon seeing you.
  • Sometimes Donovan can be carrying very large numbers of Caps, as many as 3,000. This seems a fairly random happening, and is mainly when he's out alone in the Capital Wasteland.

Donovan appears only in Fallout 3.

  • Exploit: get two Mini Nukes from Donovan. First, talk to him before killing the Super Mutants and he will give you a Mini Nuke. Then, kill the Super Mutants and talk to him again and he will give you another Mini Nuke.

Desmond's "best mate"

S1 - S2 - S3 - MP - S4 - S5 - S6

Donovan is a physicist (presumably a professor of physics) in London. He is also Desmond's best mate off the Island.

Donovan was introduced when Desmond was apparently sent back in time after activating the fail-safe in the Swan station. He was criticizing a student's thesis on the topic of unpredictability and random occurrences when Desmond ran in, soaking wet, calling for him; apparently proving a point Donovan was making to the student.

Desmond took Donovan to a pub where they discussed (or rather, Desmond tells him of) Desmond's future and how he had somehow been transported back in time. Donovan was skeptical to say the least ('Are you bloody insane?'), and walked out of the pub when Desmond's predictions failed to come true. Unfortunately for Desmond, he had confused the days, and his predictions were fulfilled soon after. ("Flashes Before Your Eyes")

  • The name Donovan is of Irish and Gaelic origin meaning "dark; brown-haired chieftain".
  • Folksinger Donovan (Donovan Leitch b. Glasgow, Scotland) had a hit in 1969 with his song "Atlantis", about the mythical island populated by an advanced civilization that vanished suddenly.
  • He and Daniel Faraday both work as physicists in England when they meet Desmond during periods when he appears to be "unstuck" in time.
