In Fallout world, Dogs are little different from the ones found in our world, although they have become feral and vicious in order to survive in the harsh environment of the Wasteland. Even so, just as they have in ages past, many dogs have remained faithful and beloved companions to men and women. Arguably, the most famous of these post-nuclear canines was Dogmeat, the companion of the Vault Dweller.

Though most breeds of dogs remain largely un-mutated by radiation exposure, some modified or mutant varieties do exist. The centaurs are mutants created by mixing dog, human and brahmin DNA in FEV vats. Dogs were also subject to Enclave experiments, which resulted in cyberdogs.

The following is based on Fallout Tactics and some details might contradict canon.

Dogs in Fallout Tactics are a common sight in Wasteland. They used by many factions, like Brotherhood of Steel, raiders, and even super mutants, as loyal guardians and attacking force. There are groups of wild dogs, that could be encountered in Macomb and during the travels in the Wasteland.

The following is based on Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel and has not been confirmed by canon sources.

Dogs in Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel are used by many inhabitants of the wastes. Several different types of this animal could be seen.

Dogs, also known by their scientific name Canis lupus familiaris, and colloquially known as "man's best friend", are a semi-sentient mammal native to Earth and have a long history of domestication by humans. Dogs are meat-eaters, but have get used to eat different kinds of food when living with humans. Dogs usually have from 3 to 6 puppies per pregnancy, which lasts about 3 months, considerably shorter than human's . They are often kept as personal companions by human owners, who will look after the dog and take care of its food. Dogs also serve as patrols in the military[1], tracking suspects and detecting illegal substances in police forces, etc.

Dogs were likely first domesticated by humans in East Asia, the lineage splitting from wolves approximately 100,000 years ago. Since then, they have maintained close links with humans in many ways.

Canine

Dogs were domesticated animals noted for their keen sense of smell[1] and their barking vocalizations.[5] They were often kept as pets by Humans[3] and other species, such as Talz[4]. A similar, more wild canid, was a wolf.

In their youth, both Luke Skywalker[3] and Lando Calrissian owned dogs, though tragically, Lando's was run over by a speeder. The memory would haunt Calrissian for years to come.[6] Likewise, Luke would reflect upon his pet as he left the Tatoo system for the first time on the Millennium Falcon.[3] Ken sometimes wished he had a pet dog or cat instead of a pet mooka.[5] The K-9 series companion droids were designed to imitate a dog in both appearance and behavior.[7]

Several other creatures, such as the akk dog and the Cyborrean battle dog, may have been related to dogs, or named for dogs due to similar behavior and habits.

"Dog" was also sometimes used as a term of contempt. A Mandalorian mercenary once referred to the bounty hunter Durge as Jaing's "dog."[8] Likewise, while C-3PO's head was temporarily attached to a B-1 battle droid's body during the Battle of Geonosis, he was heard to shout, "Die, Jedi dogs!"[9] Han Solo once said of Gamorreans that "[they] are as dumb as a box of rocks and sleep like a dog."[10] A more complimentary idiom was "top dog," which Canderous Ordo once used to mean the top bounty hunter on Taris.[11]

Though most mentions of dogs referred to non-sentient domestic animals, at least one sentient being existed who was only identified as a "dog." This being was an associate of the mercenary bunny Max.[2]

Behind the scenes

As with most Earth animals featured in the Star Wars canon, the status and origins of the dog remain a mystery. Quite a few organisms in the Star Wars galaxy have obvious real-world analogues that share the same name, such as ducks; rabbits; horses; chickens; frogs; cats; and, of course, Humans.

Dog-related words such as hound,[12] cur,[13] pup,[14] or puppy[15][16] are used figuratively in some sources. These may be further examples of the place of dogs in the culture of the Star Wars galaxy.
