The latter may be known as private investigators (P.I.s or "Private I's", hence the play-on-words, "Private Eyes"). Informally, and primarily in fiction, a detective is any licensed or unlicensed person who solves crimes, including historical crimes, or looks into records.

This character is an Unnamed Detective who is a male humanoid Muppet. The Muppet is purple-skinned & wears a tan trenchcoat with black hat. He makes an appearance in Episode 18 of From the Balcony. This Muppet portrays all the characteristics of a hard-boiled police detective, who switches from sweet talking to threatening on multiple occasions, as he attempts to coerce an Oscar Envelope to reveal the 2005 Oscar for Best Picture. The detective is ultimately foiled when it is revealed that the envelope actually has the 2005 Oscar for Best Documentary for a Short Subject.
