Del Rey Books is a branch of Ballantine Books, which is owned by Random House. It is a separate imprint established in 1977 under the editorship of author Lester del Rey and his wife Judy-Lynn del Rey. It specializes mainly in Science Fiction and Fantasy books.

It has been responsible for the publishing of Halo: The Fall of Reach and Halo: First Strike by Eric Nylund, and Halo: The Flood by William C. Dietz. Del Rey Books will not be in charge of future Halo books. That job will go to publisher Tor.

Del Rey is a science-fiction and fantasy imprint of Random House. They began as an imprint of Ballantine Books in 1977. The imprint is responsible for most of Random House's science-fiction publications, including all of their Star Wars books (with the exception of novels published between 1991 and 1999, which are still reprinted as Bantam Spectra books).

In late June 2004, it renewed its contract with Lucas Licensing to extend its book licensing agreement through December 2008[1]. On September 12, 2008, the contract was renewed through the end of 2013.
