Prior to 2377, Read served as a junior medical officer aboard the Nova-class surveyor, USS Darwin. During this time, he was romantically involved with the ship's chief engineer, and the eventual break-up of that relationship led him to request reassignment. ("Into the Reach")
His request was granted and he was assigned to the Galaxy-class USS Daedalus to serve as assistant chief medical officer, under the direction of Doctor James Maxwell. ("Into the Reach" et al.)
