Wartime Romance

During World War II, Dave Smith, a young man from London, had a romance with Blanche Hunt. After the war, Smith became a businessman, owning several bookmaking properties.

Pursuit of Elsie Tanner

Dave Smith first appeared in Coronation Street in September 1962, and set his sights on Elsie Tanner, who had had a win on the horses. In an attempt to charm her he delivered her winnings in person but offered a night out with him instead. In the Rovers Return, Dave tried to warn off a jealous Len Fairclough but was knocked to the floor. Dave didn't give up on Elsie, offering her a holiday with him, but she turned him down.

In 1966, Smith was keen to expand his business empire. He tried to buy the Corner Shop from Lionel Petty but Petty changed his mind. When Dennis Tanner began working at Smith's betting shop, Dave started trying to work his charms on Dennis' mother Elsie again. When a pair of heavies were after Dennis, Dave agreed to settle his £94 debt if Elsie became his mistress. Len Fairclough paid the money, leaving Dave disappointed again. Later in the year, Elsie's grandson Paul Cheveski went missing, and Dave pulled him out of the canal, but he never confessed it was him until the next year, when Percy Bridge took the credit in an attempt to con Elsie. After this, Elsie finally succumbed to Dave’s charms.

Local moral-voice Ena Sharples was never a fan of Smith, so when he applied to have his betting licence renewed, Ena started a petition to have his shop closed down. Smith was in conflict with Len Fairclough, who has signed the petition despite a conflict of interest since he had long carried torch for Elsie. Dave convinced Len to convince Ena to drop the petition.

Dave and Elsie’s relationship didn’t last, and Elsie was soon reunited with her wartime sweetheart, Steve Tanner. Smith was accused of assault when Steve was attacked outside the betting shop. Ironically, Len Fairclough was the one to confirm that Dave couldn’t have done it as he was in a gaming club at the time.

In 1968, after Elsie had been widowed by Steve, Dave bought Gamma Garments and turned it into a florists - "The Posy Bowl" - and offered the position of manager to Elsie. The pair eventually rekindled their romance.

Minnie’s debt

Ena, Dave and Elsie wait to hear from Minnie when she goes missing

In 1969, Smith came into conflict with Ena Sharples again after she got back the money Ray Langton owed him before he dealt with the man himself. Smith admitted that Ena’s timid friend Minnie Caldwell owed him £12 in gambling debts. He was going to wipe the slate clean as a favour to Elsie, but an unaware Ena rowed with Dave, accusing him of making children starve. He changed his mind, deciding that the debt still stood after all. When Ena found out that Smith hadn’t told the tax man about the money stolen from him by Ray, she demanded he call off Minnie’s debt. Smith agreed, and paid Ena to keep quiet. However, shortly afterwards Ena discovered Minnie had disappeared and blamed Smith. When Minnie turned up, Dave later put a limit on her bets.

Business Ventures

When Smith's wife Lilian Smith travelled from London, she wanted a divorce, and accused him of adultery. Eventually she agreed to stay married when he offered to pay her more money a week. However, his relationship with Elsie Tanner was over for good.

In 1970 Dave lent Stan Ogden £600 so that Hilda Ogden could travel to Australia to comfort her daughter Irma Barlow after the death of her husband and son. Upon returning the residents of the street gave Stan enough money to pay Dave back but Stan presented him to the deeds to his home instead, and used the money to invest in the Corner Shop, providing a job for Irma. Dave briefly walked out with the much younger Irma Barlow. Her parents were initally unsure of this liason but were later approving due to Dave's power to evict them. When the Ogdens won £500 on Premium Bonds, Stan insisted on using the money to pay back Smith.

The following year, Lucille Hewitt was mugged and two thugs took the betting shop's takings. When Lucille recognised one of them, Frank Bradley was taking Bet Lynch out, she told Dave who set upon him with a pair of heavies.

After an absence from the Street, Dave Smith showed up again in 1976, where he encountered Blanche Hunt again. He asked her to manage his country club in Kenilworth for him. Blanche left the Street with Dave.
