The DY-100 was a class of early Earth space vehicles that were first built in the 1990s by the United States of America. They most often were configured as sleeper ships owing to the amount of time it would take to travel even in between planets in the solar system before modern propulsion systems were devised. The most notable vessel was the SS Botany Bay, which was used by Khan Noonien Singh and his followers to escape Earth following the Eugenics Wars.
At the time of construction, the existence of the DY-100 was not widely known as the ship was developed under top secret conditions. The technology was taken in part from the Ferengi shuttle that belonged to Quark after it had traveled back in time and crashed on Earth in 1947. Some technology, such as the specifications for the impulse engines, were provided by Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln. (TOS novel: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume 2)
In 1996, Shannon O'Donnell and Roberta Lincoln launched the DY-100 prototype from its secret launch facility into Earth orbit. Roberta instructed O'Donnell to maintain that she was under Ferengi mind control when questioned, and then tranquilized her. Khan and his followers were taken on board the ship. Gary Seven invited Khan to name the ship, he selected Botany Bay after the Australian penal colony. After Khan named the ship, Khan and 84 of his followers were put into stasis while Gary Seven put the ship on course for a class M world approximately 100 light years from Earth. (TOS - The Eugenics Wars novel: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume 2)
Two additional DY-100 ships were discovered in an abandoned underground bunker in Africa's Western Desert in 2045. These were used to return two stranded Vulcans back to their homeworld. (TOS novel: Strangers from the Sky)
Khan's ship was found adrift by the USS Enterprise in 2267. Khan was the first to be revived when the Botany Bay detected the landing party from the Enterprise. Further examinations revealed that 12 of the stasis pods had malfunctioned during the ship's long journey, leaving 42 men and 30 women alive. (TOS episode: "Space Seed") Some of the cargo bays from the Botany Bay were then used as shelters when Khan and his followers were allowed to colonize Ceti Alpha V. (TOS movie: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)
The DY-100 later led to the development of a series of similar vessels, such as the DY-500 class. Outwardly, the DY-100 and 500 were similar enough that at times even experienced Starfleet officers were unable to tell the difference between such ships from a distance. (TOS episode: "Space Seed")
