A typical "Hed"

Dinasaur head on lost, also known as DH and invisibul dinasaur hed, is a thread in Lostpedia's discussion forums that has become a fan meme for humorous cartoons created using screenshots from Lost. Through a contest for fans by Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, the meme also came to the attention of the producers of Lost.

The thread was created on November 4th, 2008 by the user "diarmyhowley", who claimed to have noticed a shape resembling a dinosaur head on a freeze frame of the smoke monster in "The Shape of Things to Come". The discussion in the thread soon transformed into a fan meme. Users first began to parody the original post's incorrect grammar and spelling as well as its improbable theory with their own text, or text taken from similarly nonsensical posts of other users. Soon the thread evolved into users posting multiple-frame comics composed entirely of screenshots from Lost and specifically captioned with actual text lifted verbatim from other threads from within the Lostpedia Forums. Links to these threads usually accompany the comic. These comics became known as "DHs", and creating these comics as "giving Hed" or "DHing", short for the mispelt "dinasaur hed." As of October 2009, the thread had over 36,000 replies and 1,000,000 views. The thread achieved over 1,000,000 views on October 6th, 2009.

Producers' recognition

Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof commenting on the phenomenon on a March 30, 2009 TV Guide podcast [1]

On March 30, 2009, Lost producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof commented on this phenomenon in a video podcast exclusively posted by Matt Mitovich for TV Guide [2]. Previously, Cuse and Lindelof had requested that the fans help name Season 5's code-named finale scene plot twist. [3]. A campaign was run by Lostpedia to make the meme the winning name. [4] The winning entry was "The Fork in the Outlet" (Official Lost Podcast/April 6, 2009). However, the March 30 TV Guide podcast had Cuse and Lindelof announcing the number one rejected entry for the code name. The winning entry was "Invisibul Dinasaur Hed". In the interview, Cuse and Lindelof did not comment directly on the existence of the Lostpedia discussion thread so it is unknown if they are aware of its incarnation as a parody comic fan meme.

MATT MITOVICH: I'm Matt Mitovich and this is a bonus edition of's "Getting Lost". As I reported exclusively a few weeks ago, producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse decided to turn it over to the fans this season to nickname the season finale's jaw-dropping final moment. Well, they've narrowed it down to a final thirteen which they're going to reveal on's official podcast, but they've given us exclusive dibs on the number one rejected nick name. And here it is.

DAMON LINDELOF: This was hard because there were so many fabulous rejects to choose from. But the number one reject that did not make it to he top thirteen...

CARLTON CUSE: is the "Invisbul Dinasaur Hed".

DAMON LINDELOF: spelled ...

CARLTON CUSE: "Invisible" with a U-L, and "head" with just H-E-D.

DAMON LINDELOF: We will not be naming the final scene that. But it is the number one reject!

CARLTON CUSE: "Dinosaur" is also spelled D-I-N-A-S-A-U-R.

CARLTON CUSE: But apparently there's a long running joke among members that if you look at a scene where there's a smoke monster, if you pause it in the sixth frame and tilt your head to the left, you will see an invisible dinosaur head.

  • Although the original poster spelt "head" correctly, the alternative spelling "Hed" was first used by a different poster while replying to the thread. [6] The spelling was then adapted by posters to accompany the misspelling of "dinosaur".
