The Extraliga is the top professional league from Czech Republic. It was created in 1993, following the dissolution of the former Czechoslovak Extraliga who had to cease its activities when Czech Republic and Slovakia became two distinct countries. The league's name is available for rent, thus meaning it frequently changes as sponsors do. The league sported the following names through the years:

In 1999-00, Staropramen Extraliga; From 2000 to 2002 Český Telecom Extraliga; From 2002 to 2006 Tipsport Extraliga; Since the beginning of 2006-07: O2 Extraliga.

The league brought new rules to be applied starting the 2006-07 season. They are:

- The addition of overtime and shootout to eliminate ties
- Teams ranked 7th through 10th at the end of the regular season will have to play a pre-quarterfinals series (best of five) to determinate which teams will join the top 6 for the "real" playoffs
- The last player to touch the puck before the goal scorer will from now on be the only player to be given an assist.
