Playing Career

He was drafted 176th overall by the Calgary Flames in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. Despite beginning his pro career as a back-up to highly-touted prospect Brent Krahn, Krahn's recurring injuries allowed McElhinney to become the lead goaltender for the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights in 2005–06, an American Hockey League All-Star in 2006–07 and the Calgary Flames back-up goaltender in 2007–08.

McElhinney made his National Hockey League debut on October 22, 2007 against the San Jose Sharks in relief of starter Miikka Kiprusoff. He appeared in five games with the Flames before the acquisition of Curtis Joseph saw him sent back to the AHL's Quad City Flames where he remained for the remainder of the season. McElhinney has returned to Calgary for the 2008–09 season, once again serving as the team's backup goaltender. His first win after 18 appearances came against the Edmonton Oilers in the last game of the 2009 regular season.
