Crossbows are a type of weapon commonly used by Archers. Although typically more powerful than bows they fire in a direct line of sight rather than an arched trajectory of a bow, which sometimes can be a disadvantage.
The first appearance of a Crossbow in the series. It is a low-ranked bow and can be used by several characters.
The Crossbow appears as a weapon that can be used by the Ranger job. It can inflict Instant Death.
Crossbows are one of the two major types of Marksman weapons (the other being Guns). They seldom reach the same power of Bows or Guns, but there exists special "status bolts" which can inflict a variety of status ailments, making them useful in some circumstances.
Crossbows are Long-Range weapons which deal normal damage. They generally do not deal as much damage as Bows and its accuracy can be badly affected by windy weather or low visibility, but they have the shortest recharge time of any ranged weapon. Bolts must be equipped in order to use crossbows.
Archers are able to use Crossbows in battle. They are one-handed weapons, usually with a range of four tiles and are unaffected by height. However the main disadvantage of Crossbows is that they cannot be fired over obstacles like regular bows can so the target must be directly in front of the crossbow user with no obstacles in between in order for the target to be hit.

A Crossbow is the weakest crossbow and the weakest overall ranged weapon in RuneScape, along with the Phoenix crossbow. It does, however, have the advantage of being wieldable with a shield, unlike long/short bows. It requires a Ranged level of 1 to wield, and can only use bronze bolts. The crossbow and Phoenix crossbow are the only two crossbows available in free play. However, due to their severe lack of power and ranged attack bonus, they are rarely (if ever) used.
It can be recommended at Al Kharid for safe-spot ranging scorpions for experience because of low bolt cost in free play, costing only 12,000 to raise an average of 36,000 experience at level 50 Ranged.

Crossbows were primitive weapons used normally by archaic peoples with no blaster technology. They fired small arrow-like projectiles, known as bolts. The crossbow needed to be cranked via a windlass after each shot and had a slow rate of fire, although the hitting power and accuracy of this weapon was not to be underestimated, and many professional assassins included modified versions of these weapons in their arsenal, as they were absolutely silent.
