Alligators and Crocodiles are different species belonging to the order crocodilia, of the class sauropsida. To the layman, the two species are easily confused. (The main visual differences are that alligators have a broader snout and crocodiles show both sets of teeth when their mouths are closed.) Crocodiles are native to the Americas, Africa, Australia, and Asia, whereas alligators are only native to the United States and China. The U.S. is, in fact, the only location where crocodiles and alligators co-exist, although crocodiles are almost extinct in this country.

Alligators and crocodiles have appeared in several Muppet productions over the years, with the same puppets used interchangeably for both species.

The Muppet Show

A crocodile first appeared on The Muppet Show in the "Never Smile at a Crocodile" number on episode 114. Mary Louise rode the crocodile through a swamp, and as she sang, the crocodile ate a series frogs. In this first appearance, the crocodile puppet had angry eyes and a black mouth.

The crocodile appeared again in "Ugly Song," where he was performed by Frank Oz. Three smaller crocs debuted in episode 214, as back-up singers for Elton John in "Crocodile Rock." For this appearance, the main crocodile puppet was tweaked slightly, having been given eyebrows and a red mouth.

The puppet made sporadic appearances throughout the run of the show, addressed as either an alligator or a crocodile, as called for by the script. The puppets' first appearances as alligators were in episode 221, when Animal took up alligator wrestling as a hobby. The alligators, not surprisingly, lost the match, and one of them could be seen escaping with a white flag of surrender clenched in its mouth.

In another memorable appearance in episode 419, the crocodile ate the Newsman as a punishment from the ancient Egyptian crocodile god, Rezal-evad-gib.

The crocodile appeared in a North Pole-themed number in episode 501 of The Muppet Show, "Jambalaya", biting Catgut, who's trying a spot of ice fishing.

The same puppet appeared as an alligator in The Muppets at Walt Disney World, scaring Miss Piggy as she made the soggy trek to Paradise Swamp.

Sesame Street

"Let's Lay an Egg".
"Animals in the Bedroom".

On Sesame Street, a life-size alligator puppet was made for Season 24.

Among other appearances, the alligator sings a line in the song "Let's Lay an Egg". It also appears in Ernie's song "Animals in the Bedroom", identified as a crocodile.

Other Alligators and Crocodiles

Another puppet appeared as Sly the Crocodile on episode 104 of The Animal Show.

Arnie the Alligator, a friend from Kermit's home swamp, scares Bernie the Agent at the beginning of The Muppet Movie. Although played by a real alligator in The Muppet Movie, Arnie was portrayed as a puppet in the direct-to-video prequel, Kermit's Swamp Years.

Caiman, a crocodile with a completely different design from any previous Muppet crocodiles, appeared in The Song of the Cloud Forest.

Pickles, an alligator, interacted with Gonzo in presentation on how to butter an alligator originally posted to Muppets.com in 2009.

From the RuneScape Wiki, the wiki for all things RuneScape

Crocodiles can be found in various places:

  • Level 63 crocodiles inhabit the banks of the River Elid south of Pollnivneach, north of Sophanem, which has a bank for players who have completed the quest Contact!, and west of Nardah, which also has a bank. These hit for a maximum of 6 damage and always drop bones with no other items.
  • Larger level 89 crocodiles infest the southern coast of the Kharidian desert, to the east of Sophanem. These hit a maximum of 12 damage. They drop big bones and as such occasionally drop Long bones and Curved bones.

Most crocodiles are found in areas where Desert heat is present and thus require players to have a Water source to avoid taking damage from thirst. An exception are the level 89 crocodiles that are found to the east of Sophanem in the swamp.

Strategy

  • A stabbing weapon is most effective at puncturing their thick, scaly hides.
  • Waterskins or an Enchanted water tiara are needed as they are in the desert. Waterskins can be refilled in various places, such as in Pollnivneach at the Fountain/Well using a Bucket bought from the General Store.
  • Desert clothing slows the rate at which desert heat affects you. However, wearing it would greatly reduce the defensive capabilities. A way to counter that would be to use Prayer and fight the ones by Nardah, recharging prayer at the altar there.
  • If you get low on health, collect Desert Goat Horns by killing Desert Goats and sell them to a General store then use this money to buy Kebabs from the Pollnivneach shop.
  • Take about 200gp so that you can buy Kebabs for Health.
  • Food can be obtained by searching banana trees along the banks of the river, though these are sometimes empty.
  • If you decide to take on the level 63 crocodiles by the river for your crocodile slayer assignment, bring a bow and sufficient arrows (400+), because they are frequently on the other side of the river. The level 89 crocodiles can be fought with melee without much incident, but they do hit hard for their level.
  • If a crocodile is killed while partially or fully in water, the bones will be dropped in the water.
  • You can hide at the carpet man and range them they won't come to you but sometimes you will be pulled away from him if you have auto retaliate on.
  • The Enchanted water tiara, which can be made after completing the Dealing with Scabaras quest, can be stocked up with water runes and used as a water source against desert heat. This item makes slaying crocodiles an easier task, as players can wear good armour and stay a long time in the desert. It can also be used with Guthan's set. Simply wear the tiara most of the time and switch to the Guthan's helm when necessary to heal.
  • If you decide to kill level 89 crocodiles there a few that spawn in the swamp east of Sophanem. Also there is a stream to fill your waterskins to the north by the Archeologists.

Trivia

  • Many players do not like being assigned crocodiles as slayer tasks, as the combination of poor drops and desert heat makes the task somewhat difficult and rather unrewarding.
  • The examine text is a quote from the classic song Never Smile at a Crocodile.
Wikipedia
Wikipedia has an article about:
  • They supposedly swim through water, so they can cross water, but they WALK ON the water.
  • New players should NOT train non combat skills near crocodiles, or if the crocodile is on the other side of a river.
