A nation-state is a sovereign political body, often one which encompasses a single cultural or ethnic group. In the history of many planets, a number of nation-states are formed prior to the formation of global governments. In cases such as with United Earth, these individual nation-states retain their sociopolitical identities even after unity has been achieved.
