Beginning in October 2007, DC began to put out a bunch of one-shot archive collection comics, to highlight key events from old issues that tie into Countdown. As continuity progresses, older stories tend to be discounted and forgotten, and there is a trend in DC Comics to try and emulate these older stories with modern twists. The Countdown Special one-shots specifically exhibit the issues emulated and homaged in the Countdown story events. They are all roughly 80-Page Giants, and cost about $5 each, which is $2 more expensive than the contemporary.
